CMPA - rechallenge - please help!

Hi everyone,

My little boy is nearly 13 weeks and around 6 weeks we discovered he might have CMPA. His symptoms were generally so upset, screaming, terrible painful bottom wind, grunting and straining and crying with his bottles.

We tried Nutramigen and then Alfamino. The Paediatrician wants me now to reintroduce him to cows milk formula again to confirm whether or not he has CMPA, or not.

I don’t know much about this at all. I’ve been told that I can introduce one scoop of cows milk formula into his Alfamino and build it up if he manages and to keep a close eye out for his previous symptoms returning.

Im so nervous to unsettle him again, but also do not want him to remain on Alfamino if he doesn’t have CMPA. Some of his symptoms, such as the grunting, also lend themselves to silent reflux, which could very well be being made worse by the really thin Alfamino.

Has anybody been through similar? Did you have success when reintroducing cows milk formula? I’m looking for some reassurance that he might manage okay. I think I might use Hipp organic this time, as I’ve heard it is gentle on their tummies?

Thank you! X

If you do this, I'd do it on Monday morning when the GP is open, just in case.

Is LO under a Paediatric Dietitian? That's usually a standard referral of CMPA is suspected Smile

Yeah he’s under a paediatrician, but not a dietician. I was told a referral would be made to a dietician if CMPA was confirmed xx

Both mine have had cmpa although mainly bf, milk and milk products are only introduced after they are 12 months and have been free from infection for 8 weeks (dd had a chest infection so we can’t start the milk ladder yet). Ds is now 4 and still haven’t reached the top of the milk ladder.
I was told that the milk protein inflames the gut and that’s why it takes awhile after milk is removed from the diet for all the symptoms to go. It also means when milk is reintroduced it takes awhile for all the symptoms to reappear.

Hi - did you have any luck with this? My LO is exactly the same symptom wise very gassy and upset a lot. We have tried similac & Alfamino but neither have helped his symptoms. I’m debating trying normal cows milk again just to see if he will drink more and if it actually is CMPA as it’s misdiagnosed alot! He’s on omeprazole for his silent reflux. Not sure what effect going back to cows milk will have on him. Did it work for you?

We re-introduced at age 4

Allergy confirmed here at 6mo. Dietician is advising us to reintroduce at c.10mo ... is your go getting you to do too much too soon? Takes at least six weeks for all traces of dairy to leave in the first place.

That seems really quick to be reintroducing dairy. Insist on dietician referral. My daughter was diagnosed CMPA at 6 weeks, we only reintroduced it at 2 years. It wasn't a success. If you baby is happy and not suffering symptoms, why risk causing more pain and suffering. I'm saying pain because I'm intolerant/mildly allergic to dairy and when I've had some it causes horrible stomach pains, why do that to a baby. Just tell the doctor no, they can diagnose it from no longer wheezing, no coughing, rashes, excema, diarrhea or constipation. My daughter is 15 now and has never managed to get past butter on the milk ladder. Don't be forced to rush it. Good luck
