Formula prep while travelling on a plane help!

LifesTooShortYOLO · 15/08/2021 21:15

I'm travelling abroad with a 6 month old and I can't get my head around how to organise the bottles for the 4 hour plane journey 🤯
What does everyone do while flying, airport etc.
I'm going to pack a large tub of formula in my suitcase and one in hubby's suitcase.
It's the plane hand luggage journey I'm struggling with.
Help 😂🤯

Buy the ready made ones

DragonLegs · 15/08/2021 21:16

At most airports you can buy premade formula in cartons. Just order some in before you go and collect at the airport. You should be able to bring some in too with you.

Lazypuppy · 15/08/2021 21:16

Yep take ready made, i packed powder formula in my suitcase for when we were on holiday but had plentybof the reqdy made for travelling etc

Buy ready made

If really not possible take an empty sterilised bottle, pre measured formula (you can buy little formula pots for this), ask for some boiling water from the cabin crew, and some ice in a cup, make the formula up with the water, stick it in the ice to cool. You'll have to do that in advance.

Or just before boarding get some boiling water to make it up. Will be cool enough by the time you've boarded/ taken off probably and if not you can ask for some ice from cabin crew You could also ask them to store it in the fridge for you till you need it maybe?

Sanch1 · 15/08/2021 21:23

You can't take it through but you can order it from a shop air side and collect it. You have to order it though eg boots.

Buttons294749 · 15/08/2021 21:24

Boots are really good with stuff like this

Order airside and all you have to do is collect!

You can take enough formula for your journey with you.
allofthecheese · 15/08/2021 21:34

You can take however much baby water/food as you need for the journey. There's no limit on this. I've travelled alot with DS and it's always been fine. When going through security you just remove it and they scan it all and then return it to you.

I took his bottles pre-filled with measured powder, one flask with sterlised cold water and another with hot. When he was ready for a feed add 1/3 hot water and shake. Then top off with 2/3 cold water. Its the perfect temp.

I also took loads of pouches for him for the journey and that all went through fine too. I carried it all in my changing bag.

LifesTooShortYOLO · 15/08/2021 21:42

So I've checked my airport and they so t have a baby milk order service. So what is the best way to do this?

What airport are you flying from OP?

onedream · 15/08/2021 21:50

If there is boots store after security at the airport you are flying from you can order online and collect from there..

Take it with you then. You can take sufficient food and formula for your journey
GlamGiraffe · 15/08/2021 21:51

You CAN take liquids for a baby to drink through security at airports now, rither in the form of pre made formula or water in bottles (depending in what your formula requires). Also things like ellas pouches are allowed. They all must be put in a separate bag and separate tray at security who then put each of them inside a machine which scans them for safety. This has been the case at airports in the uk and europe for 4 years now.

onedaysoonish · 15/08/2021 21:53

You can take the pre-made bottles through - I had six 200ml bottles in my hand luggage last week - they scan them separately.

MiddleClassProblem · 15/08/2021 21:54

I used to do a click and collect at boots in the airport airside - after security. Add any bits you may need that are liquid in particular or weight might be and issue at check in.

MaggieFS · 15/08/2021 21:55

Yes, you absolutely CAN take more than enough pre made formula with you. Keep it separate from your other liquids and when you get to the X-rays, give it to them at the same time. They may well take it aside for additional swab testing.

Personally, I wouldn't risk the pre order and collect airside option just in case something went wrong, but I know plenty of people use it successfully.

MaggieFS · 15/08/2021 21:56

(And depending on where you are going, take enough pre made for the return journey with you checked in so you have it for the way back).

SkyLarkDescending · 15/08/2021 22:24

Yes take preprepared. Be aware though last time we flew, they opened the premade bottles to test them which then meant they were supposed to be used up within 2 hours. We were going on a 3 hr flight. I also had yoghurt and a fruit pot for my baby (recently started weaning) which they wouldn't let me take through as it wasn't a baby food pouch! I was livid.

We ordered from boots and collected airside the next time we flew.

LifesTooShortYOLO · 15/08/2021 22:25

Thank you! We a few flying from Exeter.
They do not have a boots.
So I'm thinking of taking the ready made Aptanil bottles purely for the plane/coach journey in my hand luggage. As a previous lister says you can't take them through at 200ml a bottle?

Your method is not within age guidelines for baby formula. 1/3 of the amount of hot (not boiling) water won’t kill off any bacteria that is in the milk powder. There’s a reason for the guidance.
NavigatingAdolescence · 15/08/2021 22:29

Yes - saves you the faff of getting it through security. I’d order enough to last you a couple of days too. Check you can get more to bring back with you too.
