A job that fits school hours?

MamaOl93 · 14/08/2021 19:38

My dad has always helped me with childcare two days a week while I can work those two days, now he’s told me I have to leave my job as he won’t help me anymore. I work for the NHS so naturally I’m devastated.
He’s told me to find a job within school hours.
I’m due to give my notice in this week as I requested my hours to be changed but it’s not “within business needs” of doing 9-3.
Please help 😢

I pressed post too quickly - what jobs could I do?

How old are your children?
My first thought was to work at their school. Admin? Lunch supervisor? Cleaner?. T A needs some qualifications I think.

Fadingout · 14/08/2021 19:42

Could you afford childcare? Maybe a childminder after school?

You’ll be really limiting your options. Is before/after school care not a possibility?

Mscarna · 14/08/2021 19:45

What were you doing at the NHS?

SweetToTheBeat · 14/08/2021 19:45

How old is your child?

I would start looking for childcare, especially as it's only two days a week. I don't think you should quit your job. Absolutely loads of people rely on childcare. It will be OK. Thanks

Agree. School hour jobs are like hens’ teeth.

I work in a school and still have to be there an hour before I drop my kid off and 1 hour after.

You need wrap around care, child minder to collect and maybe breakfast club?

BackAwayFatty · 14/08/2021 19:47

I work for the bank, mostly school hours.

What about a work from home job? I see banking entry level positions advertised on Linked In.

Agree with others, look for childcare, don't give up your job. Are you in the UK? Do you get universal credit? They will help with 85% of childcare.

Todaytomorrowyesterday · 14/08/2021 19:47

You may be able to find a child minder? I know in our area working parents have used this option?
We have always used breakfast /afterschool clubs in the past. Both my children enjoyed them worth checking out even if your school don’t do them you may find other local schools pick up from other schools?

AttaGirrrrl · 14/08/2021 19:48

Look at alternative childcare rather than changing jobs?

Phineyj · 14/08/2021 19:54

Surely paying for wrap around care is better financially than giving up and looking for a job that will probably not replace what you earn now minus the childcare? (and don't forget to factor in the pension contributions).

Round here wrap around is about £20 a day (not a cheap area). That's from 7.30am and after school to 6pm.

Had you assumed your Dad would carry on indefinitely? Maybe reframe it as "Dad has saved me £x in wraparound to date, lucky me"?

ParityJ · 14/08/2021 19:57

I have been looking for this job for over year now. It's really hard as they seem so few and far between. Childcare runs only 8-6 Monday to Friday and a lot of jobs want weekends or nights. Even LIDL want you available till midnight.

Indecisivelurcher · 14/08/2021 20:03

Civil service or govt departments, v good for part time + flexible working.

PeonyTime · 14/08/2021 20:10

Would your current hours fit within a childminders working day, or are you currently on 12 hr shifts?

School hours, term time only, jobs are pretty rare, and often poorly paid, as they can attract lots of candidates looking to minimise childcare. I wouldnt hand in your notice until you have something if it is possible to cover your hours.

kayakingmum · 14/08/2021 20:13

I would have thought it would be easier to find alternative childcare than a new job.

Jobs in the Council can often be flexible.

Mscarna · 14/08/2021 21:43

If you are a careworker, you could do 2 x 12 hour shifts, one at the weekend if you have a dp to care for DC. That way you can work 24 hours per but only pay one day's childcare. That can work.

Seesawmummadaw · 14/08/2021 21:45

Can you look for alternative childcare?
What’s your role?

Comedycook · 14/08/2021 21:48

now he’s told me I have to leave my job as he won’t help me anymore

He can stop providing you with childcare but he can't tell you to leave your job.

Does your dc school have a breakfast/tea club? Childminder? You might be entitled to financial help if you need to pay for childcare.

LaTomatina · 14/08/2021 21:51

School bus/service bus driver. You'd need to do your license, but so long as you already have a car license and a bit of experience it's not that hard, and most bus companies will pay for you to do it if you will work for them for at least a couple of years after.

FatAnkles · 14/08/2021 21:52

We've used family, childminders, nurseries and after-school activities to help with childcare. We've never changed jobs.

again2020 · 15/08/2021 18:04

Nothing new to add but I'd be looking at breakfast clubs, child minders and after school clubs for childcare. Try not to give up your job if you like it and can arrange something else.

GintyMcGinty · 15/08/2021 18:06

Breakfast club?
After school club?
Childminder?
