What do your nine year old boys like to do please?

Asking on behalf of my older teen DD who has got a job playing with a nine-year-old boy in English for a few hours a week (parents have a different mother tongue) before he starts school in September.

Dd has prepared battle ships, vocabulary of bicycle, dinosaurs, football etc and some card games, but we don't really know much about nine year old boys in this household (all older teen girls) and would welcome any advice about games that nine year old boys enjoy playing and maybe some other ideas for activities. There is an eleven year old brother who may join in on occasion too. I know it depends on the individual DC to an extent but DD likes to be prepared! TIA for any advice or info.

Xbox. Watching weird things on YouTube. Talking about the weird things he's watched on YouTube.

Baking cakes, going out for a walk and finding sticks to mess about with, still loves a good playpark.

He likes going to a cafe for a drink and a cake and having a good old chat about everything and nothing.

Card games? Top Trumps? Uno?

Mine is not very interested in football or sport usually but did enjoy the Olympics. That might be a good topic of conversation?

At 9yo:

Cooking/baking

Board games - monopoly, battleships, bird bingo, articulate kids (may be v good for language development)

Other games - hangman, boy/girl/fruit/flower, uno, top trumps, exploding kittens (this is a favourite), dobble (another favourite)

Going to the supermarket (again, good for vocabulary), stopping for a cake and a hot chocolate afterwards

Cinema and theatre (but I’m guessing not what she is there for), football, soft play and play parks, feeding ducks etc

Collage - in a big way. A long length of paper on a roll, using all the arts and craft stuff we had, including recycling stuff. Pick a theme eg seaside, and go from there

Reading - you can buy books that have quizzes at the end to check comprehension and talk around what they’ve read like amazon.co.uk/Level-Wallace-Pearson-English-Readers/dp/1447931386/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=books+matter+of+loaf+and+death&qid=1628941674&sr=8-3 this]] in whatever theme they’re interested in

Mine likes Lego, chess/draughts, superhero figures, Minecraft, anything relating to Doctor Who or Harry Potter. He enjoys learning new games (Yahtzee a recent hit), YouTube art tutorials and writing stories about any of the above.

Lego, Minecraft, Bakugan.
He likes Harry Potter, Star Wars, X men, Marvel etc. Currently watching Quantum Leap, Ghosts and Stranger Things.

IndanthroneBlue · 14/08/2021 13:31

Lego, bike/scooter/skates/skateboard, board games (labyrinth, pandemic, monopoly, forbidden island, battle ships, chess), card games, history, horrible histories videos and books, pavement chalks, craft kits, slime, science experiments the messier the better, building dens, dressing up, nerf battles

ButForTheGrace · 14/08/2021 13:34

I used to run a cub pack so have plenty of experience keeping 8 - 10 year old entertained. In no particular order -

Lego (free play or look up some Lego challenges online),

Paper aeroplanes (lots of books and online tutorials for different designs) - use it as a means to explain how planes fly.

Simple science experiments (vinegar/soda, cornflour solid/liquid, etc)

Baking - sweets, cookies, traybakes, pizza

Lots more I could add

Thank you so much for all of these terrific suggestions! You are all really kind to take time out of your day to write them down!

ButForTheGrace those suggestions are really great! I can tell you have experience with 9 year olds Grin. May we please come back to you if DD runs out of ideas?

A mixture of NERF battles and Harry Potter sounds good to me! Grin
