Is feeding before nap so bad?

Hi there im not feeding my 6 month old to sleep, as in she's not asleep when I put her in her cot, but she likes having her milk before her naps rather than after. Is this such a problem? She is on solids now too.
I'm up for trying to change this pattern if there's a problem but can't really work out if there is one. She sleeps well now, waking for 1 feed at around 1 am (which we are reducing slowly) and then typically goes till 7. She will feed when she wakes at 7, but then feeds again before each of her 3 naps and then before the big sleep.
Any thoughts most welcome!

If it works for you there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it!

AnnaSW1 · 12/08/2021 13:55

Why are you thinking it's a problem? Sounds totally normal.

If ts working don’t change , if it’s not look to change something.

Meh, I always did it and my kids are pretty average sleepers.

This is how ive always done it. I follow the nanny louenna routines with my son (norland nanny) shes on Instagram, very knowledgeable lady ive learnt a lot from her about sleep cycles and baby sleep etc. And she advises you give a top up before their naps.

Thanks guys! I'd just red stuff that you shouldn't feed to sleep as it can create bad sleep associations. I think I'll stop googling and enjoy my baby finally sleeping better!!

Pah. I fed to sleep til she stopped falling asleep while feeding (before 1 year I think). When it comes to sleep, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it!!

Vicky1989x · 12/08/2021 15:27

If she’s still awake when put down then I’m not sure the ‘feed to sleep’ thing applies. I’ve always fed my DD before her naps (awful reflux and found doing it this way meant she bought up less milk). She’s 15 months old and still has milk before her afternoon nap now.

If it’s working for you then go with it Smile

Actually, you're doing it the way that a lot (,most) routines suggest. I followed the EASY method (Tracey Hogg) and that advocates for a gap between eating and sleeping. Reason being is that milk, whilst making the baby a bit drowsy at first, gives them a big energy boost about ten minutes later as it starts to metabolise. Do trying to get them to sleep or to stay asleep then is much harder. Same reason we as adults usually wait a couple of hours after eating to get to bed at night.

I don’t follow any particular routine. But I always offer dc a feed before a nap because I think he’ll settle better with a full tummy, which he always does. I don’t feed to sleep, not intentional, he just always goes down awake.
Just do what works for you, there isn’t any right or wrong.

bleachblondemom · 12/08/2021 15:43

Our routine is the same. He has a bottle before naps and before bed. He doesn’t feed to sleep, he just prefers to have his milk at that time. Then at meal times he has solids.

Do what works!

jlr1986 · 12/08/2021 19:19

I’m glad I am not the only one! I initially found it easier to feed my son to sleep for naps whilst looking after my toddler (as I couldn’t spend the time with him like I would have liked!). He self soothes at night time etc... just can’t seem to crack it for naps at the moment. I keep on thinking that I need to stop this... but as others have said don’t fix what isn’t broke!

whateverintheworld · 12/08/2021 19:50

In my view it depends whether you want/need others to put your baby down for a nap. I used to feed before naps but stopped as this was tying me to being around for all naps (EBF). As others have said if it works for you then there’s absolutely nothing wrong with it :)

It's been fine for us, ours was fed to sleep until they weren't. One went cold turkey and never drank milk. The other has a drink of milk still before nap and bed, but no longer falls asleep after. He's 18 months now and just as I was about to say he's a good sleeper I heard him let out a cry in his cot.
