Does anybody else notice this when they breastfeed?

When my LO first starts feeding I feel a bit off, a bit nauseous and almost sad like my body has just released a weird hormone. It's like that feeling when you feel a bit sad but don't know why. And then it passes after like 30 seconds. Very strange, not sure I remember this when I BF dc1

Is your little one new born? It's really common to have some form of let down response in the early days. Mine used to make me instantly fall asleep! It stopped after a few weeks

tickledtiger · 12/08/2021 12:04

I get a wave of nausea and thirst which soon passes

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 12/08/2021 12:08

A brief burst of negative emotion when you let down is common enough that it has a name: dysphoric milk ejection reflex.

Yes, I used to get that. It’s a hormone thing but it’s very weird!

OaxacaChihuahua · 12/08/2021 12:40

Definitely sound like DMER - it’s not uncommon but can be hard to deal with. I hope it gets easier for you soon Flowers

nattylou435 · 12/08/2021 13:43

Yes I get the thirst too! He is 7 weeks old now. I feel like the feelings are getting milder as time goes on, sounds like it is what PP have said, how strange!

I still get it now at 14 weeks. But it has never been a strong feeling so it’s not a problem at all.

Roundandround34 · 12/08/2021 21:43

I didn’t have any experience like it with my first, but with my second I feel utterly revolted by the thought of food when he’s feeding. As soon as he’s finished feeding I can happily eat. Very strange

I used to get the thirst! And also an urge to go to the toilet (no2) Confused Thankfully it did subside after a few weeks but I had to feed poor DS2 on the loo quite a few times!

MiddleParking · 12/08/2021 21:46

I get this. Also a second of really raging thirst, like I’ll die if I don’t have a drink.

loopyapp · 12/08/2021 21:48

There are lots of support groups for DMER on FB.

For me it’s right at the end of the feed, dependant on how long DS (17m) will drag it out once he stops drinking. It can be a mild sense of unease or a full on toe curling rage inducing wave of revolt.

Blughbablugh · 12/08/2021 21:51

Yeah I really go off the thought of food and feel slightly nauseous. I did with my dd and the same now with my 6 week old ds. I don't remember it lasting throughout with my dd though and I fed her for 22 months.

Lou573 · 12/08/2021 21:52

I had the thirst with baby no 1, not with baby no 2,
It was quite odd!

Jillish · 12/08/2021 21:53

A friend of mine had this with her 2nd child but not her first. Breastfeeding made her nauseous and angry to the point it was affecting her mental health so she switched to formula

HungryHippo11 · 12/08/2021 21:57

I had it with both of mine for the first few months.
Weirdly I also had it when I used to breastfeed DD1 while pregnant with DD2 so must be a hormonal thing.

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 12/08/2021 22:01

I used to sometimes get the toe curling "GETOFFMEEEEE" feeling with my second when I was very tired. I could breathe through it though and just let it pass.

Em2122 · 13/08/2021 19:10

I remember I couldn’t bear to be touched when breastfeeding, like if my partner touched me I would feel so touched out and angry. Also remember feeling extremely tired when feeding, but it would go away when the feed finished. Thirsty too! Can’t remember the sad feeling but I get very depressed feelings when Waking up from a nap for some reason

Fleetw00d · 16/08/2021 14:18

My friend used to feel really nauseas when breastfeeding, it sometimes completely drains me and I feel exhausted.
Have you tried having a drink that settles your stomach and gives you energy (lucozade, coke etc) next to you while feeding, or some crackers just before.
