Baby gaviscon

My 7 week old suffers from silent reflux, he’s just been prescribed infant Gaviscon. If you’ve used it how long did it take to see a difference? I was told by the gp just to use it twice a day, I’m wondering how effective to expect it to be?

It made no difference fir my DS but his was caused by Tongue Tie.

Have you been given any idea on what might be causing the reflux?

Owlshouse · 09/08/2021 22:16

My little one needed it for reflux (not silent though, lots of vomiting during and after feeds). It was immediately noticeable when mine had it, the first feed with it was like having a different baby.

I hated that stuff but DD is now 14!
If you bottle feed it may help. If you breast feed don't bother.

It thickens the milk to help prevent vomiting but it does t actually deal with the reason causing the reflux.

My DD had ranitidene which did help to soothe her acid but now it's no longer licensed I believe.

Oh and she is cows milk protein intolerant which was the probable cause. And she can't burp to this day but gets hiccups a lot.

If you're BF it's honestly such a pita and so pointless. I would push for ranitidine or omeprazole. My DC (non silent) reflux was CMPA. The gaviscon is such a waste of time imo

Buttons294749 · 09/08/2021 22:44

Ranitidine was defo licensed up to early 2020 so hopefully still available!

TokenGinger · 09/08/2021 23:01

We still had some vomiting but it did make a difference overall. It was pretty immediate.

They didn't tell us twice a day and we put it in every bottle which gave him constipation! So I'd definitely follow the twice a day advice 😂

It took a couple of days to see differences in DS. His oesophagus needed time to heal.

I managed to bf and use gaviscon, I used to mix it with an ounce of formula and give it at the end.

Ranitidine isn't given any more but omeprazole is. Omeprazole will change your babies stomach acid content though which isn't good for them long term so I'd give the gaviscon a try first. I used gaviscon for the first few months then only moved to omeprazole when he started weaning and was bringing up more food than milk.

NewmummyJ · 10/08/2021 10:50

Really helped our EBF baby with his reflux (not silent). Had to give 3-4 doses a day for several months but now he is weaning we only have to give one dose a few times a week as he is much improved!

Owly12 · 21/08/2021 20:19

We were prescribed this yesterday, gave him 2 doses and he’s already constipated. Not sure if it has helped with the spit up / reflux yet as we probably haven’t been using it for long enough yet and not likely to use it again until we have discussed with gp due to the constipation

We ended up having the same problem, after two days he was so constipated the crying was worse than with the reflux! He’s now on omeprazole which has made a difference almost immediately and doesn’t cause the constipation!

He has tried prescription milk incase of cmpa but it made no difference. Tongue tie doesn’t seem to be an issue, the doctors think maybe it’s just an underdeveloped muscle which is allowing the stomach acid up ?!

So glad you got it sorted.

It's is like having two completely different babies isn't it?

edin16 · 21/08/2021 22:03

@MrsM21
The underdeveloped muscle was the issue my DS had. You could tell because it was always certain things that made it happen...any time he was on his tummy, and if he went from lying down to sitting up too quickly for instance.

Thank you 😊 It is! I feel sorry for anyone having to go through reflux, it makes the newborn stage even more difficult!

Ranitidine was all recalled around April 2020....it has not been available in the U.K. since
SilverTimpani · 21/08/2021 22:24

It did absolutely FA for my baby. Omeprazole was far, far more effective.
