bronchiolitis

4 month old had rattley breathing overnight and in the morning threw up a load of mucus twice. has had a wet cough all day and is doing random screaming and crying like she’s in pain. was inconsolable last night for a solid 10 minutes which is not at all like her.

went to a&e today through 111 and their out of hours gp said bronchiolitis. they listened in and did her sats but nothing else. sent us home and just said wait it out.

is this really all they can do? i’m really quite worried about her. her poor throat sounds so raspy and sore and her coughs sound so bad :/ she doesn’t have a temperature.

i know doctors know what they’re doing but can anyone tell me their experience of this as i’m worried

to add: they said she’s probably got over the worst of it as i mentioned she’s had a cold for a few weeks so i think they think it’s not new. however i’m certain she caught it on tuesday just gone as we were with my cousins baby who was coughing all over her until i moved her away.

My 17 month old has got the same thing. Also went to A&E last night through 111 and came home after examinations etc with them saying it is bronchiolitis. I have just been listening to his rapid, wheezy breathing and worrying about what to do. It is very laboured compared to normal. I think maybe a bit worse than last night. Anyway I think I'm going to see how he is in the morning and if it's still bad then might go back to A&E. Or if any other worrying signs like going floppy or unresponsive etc.

It seems like all they can do is give oxygen and/or IV fluids and if the babies don't need those then we have to wait it out with calpol etc. So this is probably not much help but just to say I know how worrying it is.

Breathing rate is important - 60 breaths a minute or more is an emergency, go back to A&E

Paediatrian told me to be alert from 45 breaths a minute upwards, regularly check etc.

Breathing effort important too - don’t hesitate to go back if DC is sucking in under rib cage, between ribs or at base of throat

Hope they’re on the mend soon.

My 4 month old has just recovered from this, she was hospitalised because her breathing was so bad. She started panting so keep an eye on that, her chest sucked right in it was awful. This was about day 4 of the illness as unfortunately it gets worse before better. Don't let the doctors push you away, if you feel somethings wrong trust your instincts. You know your baby best.

They hooked my baby up to oxygen which she was on for a few days. Reduced slowly until she no longer needed it. They also gave her an inhaler initially when in hospital just to give her an extra boost but wouldn't discharge her with one. They also told me to feed her smaller amounts more often, not sure if you BF or bottle feed but I gave her 3 ounces every 3 hours. It reduces the pressure on the lungs from a fully tummy of milk. It does really help. They base the milk needed on their body weight though so just bare that in mind too.

Have you got any saline nose drops and a snot sucker? With bronchiolitis their snot can become harder than usual so sound very blocked up. My baby had a few saline nose flushes and suctions (appreciate it's stronger in hospital) but that will help if your LO has a really blocked/stuffy nose.

Hope your baby is okay though and you too! It's a stressful situation and you do feel helpless.

Exactly what @MiniMaxi said as well, I was told the same thing on the breathing.

Hi @bumblebeebanana. Hope your little one is ok. Mine has been admitted to hospital with it tonight and is now on oxygen and a feeding tube. So definitely follow your instincts and got to GP or straight to A&E if worried. We saw GP this morning, who sent us back to A&E and now here we are.

My 18 month old had this. Apparently it is going around. We were given an inhaler and first steroids but they didn't seem to help then antibiotics which did help. If breathing still difficult and baby unsettled go back to hospital and ask for inhaler and/or antiBs
