Toddler multivitamin recommendations

My 14 month old is currently on the Wellbaby Multivitamin liquid that has to be added to milk or water. This was great when he would have a full morning feed from a bottle and I’d know it would all go down. Now we are getting rid of the bottle and he’s sipping from a cup, it’s anyone’s guess how much milk he will have, not to mention the spillages.

Can anyone recommend anything like drops that can be administered orally through a syringe or the like? Just want piece of mind he’s actually taking the vitamin.

As an aside, does anyone know why this has to be added to a drink? Can it be added to food? I know that 99% of the time he will clear his breakfast plate!

You can just the squirted the well baby vitamins into their mouth with a syringe or mix with yoghurt.

Just add it to his breakfast!

I use this liquid for my little one, too. I mix it in milk then add the milk to her porridge or weetabix every morning. Not sure if that's right or makes it less effective but it's the only way she'll take it.

Thanks everyone. I also was thinking about the yoghurt or mixing with breakfast milk. I called the health visitor hub to ask and the health visitor said she wasn’t sure. She said it could be that it’s not absorbed as well with food or it’s altered by some components in certain foods. I would think it’s better than nothing at all though. She recommended Abidec for the drops but reviews seem to be quite unanimous in that it tastes awful and stains. I guess I’ll mix it with the milk for cereal or in yoghurt for now whilst I email the manufacturer for a proper answer to the food mystery. Will update when (or if!) I get a concrete answer!

I use the Abidec raspberry 1-5 yo one which is much nicer tasting than the orange baby one. It stains but I spoon it into DD (she comes running for it) and she generally doesn't spill any as she isn't messing about with it. It contains sugar but I give it just before or during a meal /water so hopefully it gets washed off her teeth. I think most vitamins get absorbed better with food AFAIK.

We've tried lots and the best ones are the NHS drops! They are free from Brightstart centres or Superdrug sell them.

I know Abidec is generally not very popular but my DD loves the orange one from the syringe, it's only a tiny amount to get in too. I do give to her in the bath before she does her teeth though, just to avoid tinting everything orange!

Lovelostnfoundx · 04/08/2021 13:07

Ah I didn’t realise there was a raspberry one. Mind you, he eats some strange flavours for a baby so he might love the orange! Also the NHS ones look really good value! Thanks for the recommendations - think I will try those as he will be on them for a long while yet so won’t go to waste.

Another vote for the NHS ones from Superdrug. You only have to give 5 drops so I just drop them onto the first spoonful of breakfast 👍

Just to update on the response from Vitabiotics:

We would like to reassure you that it is perfectly fine to give the Wellbaby Multi-vitamin Liquid straight from a spoon/syringe or mixed within food e.g. yogurt. The reason as to why we recommend that it is mixed within milk or water is for ease of administration.

We do, however, recommend that the mouth is wiped after administration, as the mixture contains ingredients such as Iron, which can be irritating on the skin.

It is important to ensure that your child does not take more than the recommended amount. If desired, Wellbaby Multi-vitamin Liquid may be given immediately before feeding so any residual liquid is washed off teeth and gums.

I use the wellbaby one and mine just take it from a spoon, she always has done since she started weaning and is now 2.5. I just put it on the measuring spoon & she takes it before she has desert. Makes life much easier
