The whole family has caught norovirus and we have all been vomiting over the night. We are now just feeling under the weather. My 5 year old little boy has a bad fever reaching 38 then within 10 minutes down to 36. He is now saying his ribs really hurt and his body aches? Has anyone please got any advice on this? And keeping the fever under control?

Has he had Calpol?

Regular paracetamol. Also ibuprofen if needed. Paracetamol comes in suppository form if he continues vomiting and cannot keep it down.

Dioralyte ice blocks to suck and replace fluids

No dairy, spicy or oily foods

Bananas are great for lost potassium from diarrhoea, and help bind things up

DH and I had this last year, we think from mussels! Dreadful! My lasting memory was DH running up the corridor to the bathroom, whilst pooing along the way!!! It was truly grim.

What’s his breathing like OP - is it rapid or shallow?
Are his hands and feet cold to the touch ?
Is he able to keep fluids down now?
The aching ribs might be sore muscles from throwing up but I’m not sure what his temp dropping within 10 mins is due to. Have you given him calpol? If you are at all worried I’d phone OOH for advice.

Hey everyone thank you for the advice, I have given him calpol which is keeping his temp steady. He’s able to keep fluids down now he just feels very hot to touch and hasn’t had anything to eat for a while. I can honestly say this is an awful virus!!

My advice is line a sick bucket with a pedal bin liner that way when they are sick you literally pull the bag out, knot it and put it in the outside bin, no washing out the bucket or head over a toilet. Just spray with some dettol or zoflora and a new bag in.

Make sure beds etc have a mattress protector on and if he will let you stick him in pull ups as they sometimes won't make it to the toilet on time.

Ice lollies are lovely for refreshing the mouth, plenty of fluids, don't worry about food. We have had noro once as a family, it was truly hell for 48 hours but okay after that, no energy, achy etc. Good luck.
