When to switch to a bed

My two (26 months) year old has been nappy free for the last three days, first day went brilliant but today there has been lots of accidents. So i’m still using a pull up for nap and bed time but basically wondering when do I take the sides off the cot bed? will he need access to the potty in the night soon or does that come much later? He’s such a good sleeper and I dont want to mess it up but also thinking is there some benefit for him to be in a “big boy bed” a family member suggested putting him in a bed because he’s also getting older ?

Mine went from a cot to a bed at 16 months.

Mine is 2yrs, 7months, and still sleeps in his cot in a 3-6yr grobag. He's never tried to climb out.

My daughter is two since March and in a double bed since just after Christmas . She shares her room with her sister and I wanted to get rid of the cot

Mine was around 2.5 years old going into a single bed (was delayed a bit due to house move). I waited til she was dry at night for a while til I took night time pull ups off & now she goes to the loo just before she goes to sleep & doesn't need to go at night. I use a waterproof mattress protector and we've had a couple of accidents but hardly any.

Blippibloppi · 04/08/2021 07:18

2.5 when he started climbing out of the cot. He was dry at night at the same time so that worked well, I can count on one hand the number of times he's been for a wee in the night (either an accident or in the potty). We have a waterproof mattress protector on and keep a potty in his room just in case.

How are so many of you having dry at night toddlers!? This is making me think it's time to toilet train

We trained in lockdown 1 last year, gave me something to do when we couldn't go out! 🤣🤣🤣

To be fair, he was the only one of his friends that was dry overnight pretty much straight away, quite a few of his pals are still in night nappies at 3.5-4yo.

MistyFrequencies · 04/08/2021 09:14

Both mine went to beds at about 18 months. My daughter was toilet trained at 3 years, dry at night straight away. Night time dryness isn't a training thing though, as I understand it, but a just happens whenever they're ready My son is 3 now and still showing no signs of being ready to ditch the nappies, day or night.

Pissinthepottyplease · 04/08/2021 10:21

My children were in floor beds until just before 2 when they went into big girl beds. DD1 was dry over night almost instantly but DD2 is a work in progress in general but she is just 24 months. They have never used a potty over night. Btw you can’t nighttime train it’s based on hormone production.

CornishGem1975 · 04/08/2021 10:29

Mine won't be moved until I physically have to. My DS is feral. The cot is my protection Grin

They’re shit sleepers. Apparently the hormone which causes night dryness often comes earlier in babies who are more alert at night.

These replies are very helpful Thank you!
Good too hear that they can be dry at night at 2.5 - the health visitor told me it was between 3-4 but that can’t be the case for all children. My son actually woke up dry yesterday morning so that shows he can hold it in over night ! Wasn’t the case this morning but nevermind. I think I will wait untill he is fully dry at night then to take the side off the cot ? Doesn’t seem much point otherwise and dreading messing up his sleep.

Mind you did any of you find once you started the potty training they woke up earlier in the morning if they were wet, as if they are aware now? We had a very early start which is not like him at all wondering if that could be the reason 🤔

I have one 5.5 year old who isn't dry at night and one 3.5 year old who is and has been for a year. They're all different!

I didn't associate move to bed with night dryness. The one who is dry sleeps through the night dry, the one who isn't sleeps through but wees. Waking up needing to wee is a later development.

Mine were both about 3 when they moved into a bed.

3womeninaboat · 04/08/2021 12:42

Keep them in the cot as long as you can. Then you don’t need to worry about them getting into anything if they wake up early and quietly. If they need the toilet in the night it’s going to be a long time before they don’t need your help at some point in the proceedings so they can just call you to get them.
You can’t train night dryness, it’s hormonal. My daughter trained perfectly at 2.5 for the day, but we needed the nighttime nappy for another year.

gogohm · 04/08/2021 12:44

About 15 months when dd learned to climb out of her cot on the lowest base setting.

Woeismethischristmas · 04/08/2021 13:03

Re the dry at night thing some children just are dry at night my twins were dry at night from about 18mo. Not fully toilet trained till nearly 3. My middle child potty trained earlier but not fully dry at night till nearly 5 apparently it’s to do with a hormone that stops you weeing when asleep.

Most children begin to produce the hormone between 3-4 but can be later or earlier. It’s not really a training thing though.

BiBabbles · 04/08/2021 13:03

Ours went straight into beds after they moved out of our room at 11-15 months (and fully walking), though our home layouts then meant we could put up one baby gate and they would only be able to get into theirs and our room, not into anywhere risky - our current place we couldn't have done that so not sure how we would handle that.

For some reason that I'm not sure about now, the idea of them being in a cot in an emergency and unable to get to me in bed was my biggest concern when they were little rather than any thoughts of potty training (though around 2.5-3, we'd put a little potty in their room overnight they could use or they could come get us to go potty).

I had a child who while potty trained fine during the day by that point, wasn't dry overnight all the time until he was 7 - we used those pyjama bottoms the help with bedwetting for it. The range of normal is very wide on this.

2 year old started potty training in July but been in a toddler bed since 18 months. She's done amazing with potty training took her off all nappy's at the same time and your lucky if she has even peed her bed 3 times and it's never been during the night it's always been first thing in the morning if she has had accident but by week 3 she no longer uses the potty she's on the big girl toilet and we have even been on days out and no accidents
