Best way to play bedtime stories/songs these days??

So my eldest is 5 and has a CD player but I can't help but think this is a bit old fashioned and there might be a better and more sustainable way of playing bedtime stories/songs. CDs won't last forever and they might even stop producing them at some point.

My 3 yo is ready for something but she's a bit rough with toys etc. so I doubt the CDs would last long at all...or the CD player!

I've seen some things with figurines/cards...are they worth the money?? Is there a simple but effective method I've not thought of like blue tooth speaker, using my phone? (But where to get content?)
Ideas and experiences welcome!

@linerforlife yes same. As a child I used to listen to loads of tapes of audio books which sent me to sleep as I was really scared of the dark. I think they provide great comfort for children at night time.

I've used an old phone before and spotify which has some lovely nursery rhymes or white noise that we use as part of the bedtime routine or when they can't sleep. We've now got an amazon fire kids that is mainly used as a speaker for this purpose. I've always used spotify.

We use a speaker that does the Hey Google thing, and then download books from Google Play store. Then the kids can say Hey Google read book name and it does. It can also connect to Spotify. It's pretty nifty

Why are people on this post so salty?!

I have audible on my kindle and I use it for myself and for ds. We downloaded winnie the pooh to start with, which my ds really likes. We don't have Alexa but I'm thinking of getting one to link to it.

Another vote for a Yoto player. The best thing we ever bought our son.

LlamasSitOnPyjamas · 03/08/2021 19:56

I like the look of a Yoto player too, been watching second hand ones on eBay as they are a bit pricey. I like that they can control what they listen to themselves and it's not as fiddly as a CD.

We used to use a CD player for audiobooks, now we use Alexa or sometimes use audiobooks on Youtube in living room, where it’s just a plain screen with the story being read. My dc really
enjoy audiobooks.

I like this post, albeit not some of the rude posts. Going to have a look at a Yoto, was thinking of a Tonie for when LO is a little older. Can’t wait for her to enjoy audiobooks!

We just got a Yoto player for my son's birthday after lots of positive reviews and recommendations from people :)

Audible and a paired speaker? Just be careful if like my friend set it up then accidentally blasted a Tik tok video through the speaker at 11pm into her child’s room Grin

I used audible every night. I listen to audiobooks to go to sleep

Our library has audio books we can access through the borrow box app, my ds2 (6) listens to lots on there (it also has e books)

adagio · 04/08/2021 21:39

Old phone and like @Dizzywizz says borrow box audio books from the library for free. I also downloaded all the cds i had already into the music app and removed apps I didn’t want kids to access - phone is effectively wifi only (and battery doesn’t last long!) - sim is in my newer phone.
