Weaning + diarrhoea

Hi

Would like a bit of advice please. I know that it's quite common for babies to get diarrhoea when they're weaning but my DD (6 months) seems to be having it all of the time. She has one solid meal a day and the rest are formula bottles. We are using the 'How to Wean your Baby' book which is really good for us as it really breaks the whole process down easily). DD seems to enjoy the solids when she has them and doesn't seem to make much of a fuss with the diarrhoea but it's concerning me that nothing is (sorry for being so crass) hardening up. It's occurred to me that she's not done a proper poo in a few days now. She is also having a bit of water in her sippy cup too. When does it go back to normal?

Thanks Smile

When you say diarrhoea, do you mean really watery and smelly or just runny little-baby poo? The former I wouldn't have thought was normal, the latter I would just think means she isn't having enough solids for it to have formed things up yet.

What is she having in the one meal a day, and how much? I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned. I seem to recall that DD's poo firmed up and darkened almost straight away, but she took to spoon feeding really well so moved up to two decent meals a day pretty quickly.

Some are quite watery and some are 'small spurts' of poop (sorry to have to say that!!) yesterday we went back to just giving her milk because I wanted to see if it would solve anything. It has perhaps a touch. Maybe she isn't having enough to 'form a full poo' hopefully in time she'll be having more. Do you think it's worth phoning the HV?

What are you feeding her ? If it’s all fruit and veg that might be too much for her.

@CoalCraft also for her one meal a day she is having things like potatoes and broccoli combined, then the day before she had chicken and green beans combined.

Have you changed her formula as well as weaning? Sometimes follow-on formula can affect them.

FelicityPike · 03/08/2021 08:59

Have you tried giving her finger food to see if she still has runny poop when eating “real” food?

I hadn't considered this actually! It's the same brand of milk (mamia) but didn't think that using follow on would change anything... perhaps I better keep an eye on that

Ah yes she likes the finger food, and I'm going to stick to the veg based ones from now on because I've noticed that the fruit based ones really don't seem to sit well on her stomach!

I'd definitely change back to first stage milk, I know it can be dearer but the NHS only recommends first stage milk.

I had no idea about this will go back to first stage and see if it improves anything. Thank you so much everyone for your help.
