Toddler being sick - worried

worriedmum8888 · 01/08/2021 10:31

Hi all, my 15 month old boy threw up a small amount of clear liquid this morning but seemed otherwise fine, though perhaps a bit quieter than usual. I later gave him some toast and fruit for breakfast and he was properly sick about 20 minutes afterwards, with what looked like his dinner from 5pm yesterday.

I’ve no idea what to do - any advice on how to help him? Also what could be causing this? I’m worried, he’s never been sick before Sad

Can I take him out for a walk? Should I try to give him more water and/or milk? Are there any particular foods I should give him? I’ve no idea what to do Sad

He’s just been sick again!

Hi lovely. Try not to panic, it’s likely just a bit of a bug he’s picked up - he’s prime age for catching anything and everything going unfortunately!

Keep him hydrated and keep an eye on his nappies - if he’s not having as many wet ones ring 111 for advice.

I wouldn’t go for a walk - it won’t hurt him but if he’s got a sickness but could be a messy experience! Keep up hydration and don’t worry too much about food - if he’s hungry stick to bland and plain like banana or mashed potato.

If he won’t drink, try ice lollies.

Honestly though deep breaths - he’ll be absolutely fine, millions of little ones pick up sickness bugs all of the time - the most important thing is to keep an eye on his fluid and wet nappies.

Stay home
Old towels nearby to catch anything and throw in washing machine
Give Water
Crackers rice cakes toast
Send some one to pharmacy for rehydration sachets for kids

Thanks so much. Is it worth giving him an extra bottle of formula milk to increase his fluid intake?

I would stick to water personally, at that age - formula/milk could make him sick again. Definitely get some Dioralyte or similar rehydration sachets (you mix with water and either give it them as a drink or use a Calpol syringe).

There are loads of bugs like this going round - our 18 month old had one a couple of weeks ago and threw up dramatically twice that morning. Nothing after that but he was off his food and clearly “not right” for a day or two. But it’s not unusual at this age. Fluid intake is more important than food with something like this.

My son was sick a few times yesterday. I just gave him sips of orange juice - diluting sometimes I add a little sugar if the vomiting is bad. But as long as he’s drinking & remaining hydrated that’s the main thing you can offer light diet once he’s not vomited for 6 hours. It should pass over, he can have paracetamol if he’s unsettled but little fluid and often. I remember my 2 little ones gave having a bug at the same time, they were 1&2 then 4 year old got it, thought the vomiting would never stop. It does of course.

I would stick to water/ weak squash for a few days.
I wouldn’t give milk (especially formula for a toddler).

My 16 month old had a horrible vomiting bug last week - she was sick every 20 minutes for about 8 hours 😱 I did have a phone chat with our GP but she wasn’t concerned so long as she had a wet nappy every 8 hours. Just something horrible to ride out. DD is my second, we’ve done this before unfortunately with DD1. Sick bugs with toddlers are awful as they are just sick everywhere! It’s a mammoth job looking after them & cleaning up afterwards! DD1 now happily uses a bucket which is a game changer!

Just keep an eye on those fluids. Little & often. Use a tea spoon to get small amounts in & staying down. You can use rehydration salts when he’s consistently keeping bigger amounts of water down!

Bobholll · 01/08/2021 11:36

Also, agree. Avoid milk & diary at all costs for a few days. It can irritate their stomachs & make them sick again!

Bobholll · 01/08/2021 11:39

Oh & also, please please stay at home for 48 hours after his last vomit or upset stomach at the other end. It’ll help stop the spread of germs!

I would avoid dairy if throwing up.

Plenty of water but little and often, don’t worry if he doesn’t eat much food for a few days.

Lots of rest

worriedmum8888 · 01/08/2021 12:09

Thanks - he hasn’t been sick again and seems better in himself. I’m going to try plain pasta maybe with a tiny bit of cheese for lunch.

Sorry, just seen the comments about dairy! Maybe I’ll leave the cheese

I gave him a nice warm bath and he had a bit of plain pasta and fruit for lunch. He’s now been asleep nearly two hours and it’s over four hours since he was last sick. Really hoping he’s feeling better, it’s heartbreaking seeing him unwell Sad

He’s also been hiccuping all day since being sick this morning Confused

His diaphragm is probably a bit irritated from the force of being sick poor thing!
