When to ditch the carry cot on travel system

How old was your DC when you moved from the carry cot to the pushchair on your travel system?

DS1 never had one, had a lie flat pushchair from birth. I started sitting it in a semi-reclined position from about 4 months.

DS2 outgrew the carrycot at 6/8 weeks old! I know that sounds nuts, he wasn't too long for it, but he liked to stretch his arms out and would get really pissed off that they bashed into the sides.

I live in Germany and mums typically continue to use the carrycot until they absolutely can't any more - once the baby is starting to roll they just let them roll onto their tummies and lie in there face down. A lot of carrycots sold here have a portion you can unzip around the front which opens up like a mesh kind of "window" so the child can see out this way which they seem to like.

Sorry meant to clarify - so it's common to see carrycots being used up to about 8/9 months. Once children can sit up unaided then they are recommended to move to the normal seat, but parent facing.

My pram carrycot is also the pushchair seat. I just couldn’t get on with the carrycot setting so she was in the seat at 6 weeks. Ds had a massive old silver cross pram he was in that until 9 months

5 months.

3cats4poniesandababy · 31/07/2021 18:01

About 5 months. My little one started hating being in the carrycot as wanted to be able to look around more.

MuchTooTired · 31/07/2021 18:28

4/5 months for mine. I can’t remember why, I’m guessing they’d probably outgrown it by then!

dannydyerismydad · 31/07/2021 18:31

I remember being told babies should stay lying flat for at least 6 months.

At around 4 months DS was rolling and trying to crawl. I didn't much like chatting to his bum as he trundled around on all fours, so switched him to his seat.

IonaLeg · 31/07/2021 19:14

About 5.5 months. He was really filling it by then, he was getting uncomfortable! He’s a big baby - ideally I’d have liked it to last longer because he slept better in it.

Fankehxudb · 31/07/2021 19:34

5.5 ish months here too. She was rolling around etc by then and so felt safer having her strapped in in the seat bit.

careerchangeperhaps · 31/07/2021 19:39

About 5 months. When she started rolling over and trying to push herself to onto her knees (she crawled soon after).

whatswithtodaytoday · 31/07/2021 19:40

About five months, he was trying to pull himself up on the sides and just wanted to see what was going on.

namechange87682938 · 31/07/2021 19:41

We had to stop at about 3.5 months. I had a really long baby so I had to use the pushchair part as flat as it would go.

Caspianberg · 31/07/2021 19:47

Around 5 months. Ds was sitting and crawling by that point so without any harness it was pretty dangerous

H8theW8 · 31/07/2021 19:49

Same as @namechange87682938 we ditched the carry cot at 3.5 months as DS is very long and just outgrew it x

Robloxmastermum · 31/07/2021 19:50

My eldest outgrew the carry cot at 8 weeks. We used the car seat for short trips and used the pushchair seat flat.

Koalaslippers · 31/07/2021 19:50

DC1, was 3 months she hated the carrycot, the pushchair laid flat which she preferred.
DC2, was 4 months when he got nosey.

Madwomanuptheroad29 · 31/07/2021 20:07

Most German and Scandinavian prams are constructed differently and the carrycots are much bigger. Advice us to use it until the baby can sit securely unaided as better for the back and more comfortable for the baby to sleep.
Also the prams tend to have fairly good suspension.
Prams with lie flat seats are sold there as "unsuitable for children below 6 months" and the use of buggies for a young baby would be frowned upon.
I once went for a short visit to Berlin to see family and for ease had my child in a lie back buggy and had people in the bus pointing out to me that this was really bad for the babies back.

ER20 · 31/07/2021 20:16

My little boy is 8 weeks old and is nearly too long for it 🙈

CoffeeMonkey · 31/07/2021 20:33

Literally haven’t taken the carrycot out of the box 🤦🏻‍♀️
Our little boy is 10 weeks & we been using the pram reclined or the car seat for short trips

Blippibloppi · 31/07/2021 23:14

DC1 - 4 months because he hated lying flat and not being able to lie flat
DC2 - just under 6 months, he was completely be wedged in by the end but he loved it and slept so well in it that I didn't want to give it up

Blippibloppi · 31/07/2021 23:15

*look round, not lie flat.

happymummy12345 · 01/08/2021 02:48

6 months, as recommended

Piccalily19 · 01/08/2021 02:58

3 months, he was a long baby and his head almost touching the top so moved him out. He also liked stretching out and seeing what was going on so much happier in the reclined pram

CallMeRisley · 01/08/2021 03:06

5 months

DappledThings · 01/08/2021 22:07

About 5 months
