Baby & Rolling over Help

LO is 6months and although he can roll over from back to front and front to back, he just doesn't seem to be able to do it altogether.
For example, during tummy time he will flip himself onto back (hates it and screams).
When on his back he will flip onto stomach but get stuck and just wiggles around not making any attempt to roll back, sometimes he just lies there locking the carpet.... Hmm
I thought he'd just need practice but it's been 5 weeks now and he still can't/won't roll fully.

Any suggestions??

I've tried leaving him, he becomes upset. I've tried sitting with him and practicing. Eldest DC has even taken to rolling with him to show him. Confused

No advice but my 6 month old is exactly the same although she’s not as good at rolling from front to back. She always flips onto front in her cot to sleep but at some point in the night will want to flip to her back but can’t so one of us has to get up and turn her over! Hmm x

My 6 month old is also the same. So no advice but it must be quite common!

Thank you for both your replies!
Glad I'm not alone in this. Grin

We will just continue practicing!

We got a light up wand of eBay and held it above baby's head and he used to track it and flip over to see the light. Also spent some time on his side playing with toys. Once he started rolling back to tummy he didn't want to do tummy to back again 🙈 we spent a few weeks in the frustrating 'skydiving' pose before he was able to start army crawling. Oh also it definitely helped not having socks on him for more grip on the floor!

My DS was the same, spent weeks being able to roll onto his front but not being able to roll back, so I had to keep rescuing him 😂 and then suddenly a few days ago he just rolled right back over! So I don’t need to help him out any more… he’ll get it don’t worry!

My LO was like this too. She could roll both ways but for some reason would sometimes roll one way, refuse to roll back and then start whinging for me to turn her back over. I was a bit worried about it at one point. She's now 9 months and has all of a sudden just got it, started crawling and getting herself in and out of sitting position.

You don’t need to do anything, honestly. Your baby will work it out for themselves in their own time and it’s actually easier for you when they don’t move!

My eldest actually never ever rolled. He hated it. He crawled at 7 months and walked at 12 months so his other motor skills were all fine. It was great because he never tried to escape when I changed his nappy! He’s a very active 3 year old now who has been riding a bike without stabilisers since he was 2 so all my worries about the lack of rolling were unfounded 🤣

Maggiesfarm · 30/07/2021 02:40

He will do it soon. I bet you in a month's time he'll be rolling back and forth and you'll be wondering why you were concerned.

I don't blame him for not liking 'tummy time', it all sounds very silly to me, giving a name to something that you do naturally with your baby but not for a set period of time regularly.

Ohdearyme20 · 30/07/2021 09:23

@Jujujuly

That is true, it is easier when they don't move! Smile

My 3yr old didn't roll much either, if at all, didn't crawl just got up and walked one day. But I think HV made me worry that he's devopmently delayed Sad and is coming back next month to see if he's doing any better... Confused

@Maggiesfarm

Don't get me started on tummy time Grin Hv 'showed' us how to do it last visit to 'build his neck muscles'. He was physically uncomfortable and proceeded to vomit everywhere (he has reflux - that a whole new topic Smile).

My second daughter does this, she keeps rolling over at night and trying to crawl as well while she's meant to be sleeping. She's not even 4 months yet so I fear I've got a long road of this ahead, I don't remember it with my first but I'm sure she did it too Blush

HVs read stuff in a book and proceed to instruct when they are only supposed to observe wellbeing and progress. Sometimes they make things up as they go along!

The most sensible thing my mum ever said to me, is that they'll do things in their own time.
I didn't realise till I started reading mumsnet, that there is so much pressure on parents to be constantly working at getting their children to hit developmental markers.

PlanetTeaTime · 30/07/2021 10:36

No advice OP except to say my little girl is 5.5 months and she hasn't rolled from back to front at all, she rolls to her side and that's it. I'm not particularly worried at all.

I'm on the wonder weeks January/February 2021 group and there is such a wide variation of abilities at this age. I actually saw a 6 month old baby WALKING on the page the other week (wth) and I've seen babies standing. But this isn't the norm. I think you realise even more how different babies are on this group because these babies are from all over the world.

Paris2019 · 30/07/2021 14:53

My DS is 8 months and has never really rolled... he has done back to front a few times but generally is just not interested in rolling. He is almost crawling though so I figure he's just skipping rolling?!
