Toddler complains of sore bottom

Hi all,

My son is nearly 3. He tends to go for a number 2 once a day, sometimes twice. More often than not, immediately after going and for some time after, he complains that his bum hurts. Occasionally it is a tiny bit red but often there is nothing visible to see. He is potty trained. He is reluctant to come off the potty and will sit there forever unless I encourage him to come off after a number 2. It does seem to be sore as I can see him tensing and he does cry. It tends to last I would say up to an hour after going with on and off complaining.

Is this normal?! Is it just the feeling of going? I have absolutely no idea what is "normal" in terms of quantity or consistency (isn't this a lovely topic!) I do feel they are quite big when he goes. Never ever solid what I would class as an "adult" one. Always sort of a Mr Whippy consistency. Sometimes softer. Again, is this normal? He goes on his own and never struggles to go.

I'm now wondering if he could be intolerant to a certain food. How on Earth can I work that one out?

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks :)

Is take him to the GP, get him checked out.

My 3yo did the same for a while. I just used to pop a bit of sudocrem on afterwards, same as I did when she was in nappies and she then stopped saying it hurt afterwards. After a month or so I started reducing the number of times I would put cream on until I didn’t need to do it anymore, and she never mentioned having a sore bottom again. It’s probably something entirely different for your DS but just thought I’d share what worked for us!

Cheeky bump to see if anyone else has experienced this? I will speak to gp if it continues for sure.

@QueenAdreena sorry I somehow completely missed this?! Yes I do put Sudocrem on and it sometimes helps but not every time unfortunately! Glad it helped for you guys!

Don’t worry! I’ve just thought, the other thing that also helped our DC was wiping them with washable flannels that we had put under quite warm water, I think we bought ours from Cheeky Wipes. I don’t think it would hurt to contact your GP either though.
