Dry nappies - almost 9 months old

Will obviously check this with HV/GP on Monday but just looking for some reassurance really!

Baby is almost 9 months old. Plenty wet and dirty nappies during the day but in the last couple of weeks he’s started not really peeing when he sleeps. Is this a normal thing?

I can see it if I change his nappy right before a nap and he goes down for an hour then it’s still dry when he wakes up (that’s what’s been happening for the last couple of weeks). But last night he slept through the night for the first time (🥳) - nappy changed at 8pm, he was asleep by 8.10pm - woke up at 5am this morning - I went to change him thinking he’d be soaking and his nappy was bone dry! He peed lots within about 20 mins of waking 🤔

Yes its fine, especially if he did a lot of wee in the morning.

You don't need to speak to a GP about this, text to the health visitor maybe if you're concerned.

My DD2 did this, dry at night before 1. Giant wee in the morning generally before breakfast. When she potty trained at 2.5 she was straight out of nappies at night too. Dd1 is still in pull-ups at night at 7. Nothing to worry about at all.

Quite normal.

Mine were both dry at night long before they gave up nappies during the day. It's a good thing.

@HungryHippo11 @Orangedaisy @Maggiesfarm Thanks all 😊 just wasn’t sure if it was something to be concerned about or not!

It's normal, babies don't really tend to pee while deeply asleep but in between cycles and as the cycles get longer and link better the dryness is more noticeable. Some kids are dry at night really early and some wet the bed for years and years.

At about this age we realised DD wasn't peeing while napping because she passed out in her swim nappy on holiday and stayed dry

It's a good thing.

Interesting - my DS is 15 months and normally has quite a heavy nappy by the morning.

Some children still wee in their sleep til quite late (it’s not really considered “an issue” until their 7th birthday) - it’s a hormonal thing you can’t control.

My 8 month old has recently started doing this. He can do 2.5 hr nap and wake up dry. He still has one night feed but I’ve found I often don’t need to change him then either, as he’s often dry. He’s wet in the mornings, but not heavy wet. Makes a change from DS1 who regularly soaked through his sleeping bag with leaking nappies.

@FizzingWhizzbee123 mine was doing exactly that up until about 2 weeks ago!! He would always be dry at his feed at 11.30/12pm then v.heavy nappy by morning. He’s dropped that night feed over the last couple of weeks though 😊

Dry at night is good. One of mine was 9 months. She potty trained super fast.

@Goawaymuppet Fingers crossed the same goes for us 🤞🏼

My DS was largely dry overnight by around 18 months. Much like your DC he'll be very wet by around 8/9am after a huge wee. He actually seems to hold and then do one big wee most of the day as well and then is sometimes asking for a change. I think he is just approaching awareness / control for potty training etc. He's 20 months now. Here's hoping he'll be out of nappies sooner rather than later! Don't think it's anything to worry about.

dopeyduck · 26/07/2021 06:29

Oh and I don't think it has anything to do with fluid intake - it's hormonal. DS still feeds 3 times in the night (although it can vary from 1-6 depending ) and he still doesn't wet.

tiredmama2020 · 26/07/2021 22:36

@dopeyduck fingers crossed he’s out of nappies sooner rather than later for you 😊
Yeah it did worry me a bit as his feeding habits have changed a lot over the last couple of weeks - although he’s still taking loads of milk as well as solids 😊 and obviously with it being so warm lately I was concerned when I seen dry nappies!

Why not try putting him on the potty after waking? No pressure put on it but just read a story or sing some songs and see if he does his big morning wee on it? My DD started to hold her wees like this at 14 months and we gently introduced the toilet (with a reducer seat). Also popped her on when she did a poo face Grin She's 20 months now and although she hasn't grasped pulling her trousers down, if she's left bare bummed she takes herself off independently for all her wees and poos. I think introducing the toilet early really helped it to be a 'normal' thing for her and training has been a doddle :)
