My son has his first birthday party for a boy in his class at school. This is the first proper party and I don't know what to do.

Do I drop him off and leave him there? It's a 5th birthday party.

What do I do about a gift? I haven't I haven't got much money, but I don't want to be rude and just send a card.

Thanks for the help x

Drop off vs staying etiquette varies greatly... I'd be prepared for either.

Present... if you don't have much money jut buy book or craft kit from discount shop- you can ge stuff from a couple of pounds. I can recommend Card Factory for cards. Or just a packet of sweets if that's honestly all you can afford. Most people do understand.

Have you got a phone number to rsvp? I usually send a message along the lines of 'thanks for the invitation, dd would love to come. Has you dc got any specific interests or are they saving up for anything? Also, would you like me to stay at the party - I don't mind either way, whatever makes things easier for you'

Drop off/stay varies so ask. For a gift go to the pound shop, discount book shop, charity shop or supermarket for a modest gift £3-5 is fine

Thank you all so much for your advice! I was feeling terrible about not being able to get him something decent. I will go and have a look at what I can get this evening.

I found at birthday parties the cheap and cheerful presents went down great as they were sort of an icebreaker at the beginning until they all got going.

Drawing book and pack of coloured pencils from a pound shop would likely go down well. You could also add some jelly sweets or bar of chocolate to make it £3.
You could help ds make a card?
