Breastfeeding baby with eczema and hives

Hey guys,

My 6 month old baby has eczema and also brakes out in hives.

I’m not sure if my own diet affects his skin condition, but I was thinking of giving up dairy.

I’m waiting for an allergy test for my baby, but the wait is at least 4 months. That’s a long wait so in the meantime I think I should try and eliminate things from my own diet to see if it makes any difference.

Why do people say to consult the GP when making changes to your own diet such as giving up dairy?

If I give up a particular food, how long must I do this for to see results?

My son was the same. At 4.5 months I gave up dairy, egg and also soya. Different baby within a week. Eczema took a while to clear up. Confirmed allergies to milk and egg followed.

Hives is a pretty sure sign of an allergy.

With regards to time, they say 6 weeks for dairy but in reality you should see improvement within a week.

What has your GP said about your babies skin condition when you asked them?

This happened to my dc. Can I ask if you've started weaning?

Go to the dr and ask to be prescribed cetirizine.

In our case it was a dairy allergy that had caused severe eczema in my bf baby but it didn't develop into hives until we started weaning and introduced more dairy into their diet.

The hive appeared once before I started weaning and also on the third day of weaning. He was given baby porridge, totally my fault for giving him processed food containing milk and soy in the ingredients. My nephew was eating it and I thought it was just like the usual oats. Totally my fault. I should have checked.

If you do try cutting dairy I'd recommend cutting soya too as many babies that react to dairy also react to soya. And check the labels on everything, it is in a surprising amount of stuff!

I'm not sure but my GP asked my why I was thinking of giving it up, I showed him the advice from Allergy UK and he said "fair enough" and referred me to a Dietitian which was actually quite helpful. Smile

I'd stop any dairy for you immediately and convert to soy and free from dairy products and
Hopefully you'll see an improvement

4 months is ages away have

Yes, I would be happy to go private. I’m unsure how to go about this and costs etc

Personally I wouldn't swap to soy products as roughly half of all people with CMPA are also allergic to soy.

Toothypegs21 · 22/07/2021 18:45

My daughter 5mo is literally the same. After a fight with GP we seem to be on a CMPA allergy pathway being seen by a dietician remotely. Plan is to completely remove dairy for 4 weeks, then have a challenge week where we slowly reintroduce. If hives eczema do not go there is another cause or allergy. One week in still there. Dietician advised not to drop soya or you'll confuse, do that for next challenge if necessary.

sherrystrull · 22/07/2021 20:34

Op that's literally what happened to my dc. He reacted to baby porridge.

Soya isn't recommended for baby boys due to the oestrogen. We used oat milk.

You need to go back to the gp and ask for a referral to the dietician. Please pm me if I can help.

Dc was diagnosed with milk and egg allergy but grew out of it by 3.
