Is this constipation or....

My baby girl is 3 and a half weeks old. She's exclusively breastfed and feeds well, approx every 2 to 3 hours. In the last week or so she's developed a lot of trapped wind which I know is quite normal and I've been doing the usual things recommended for this like burping her, gentle massage, infacol etc. Until a couple of days ago her poos were normal for bf poos ie yellow, quite wet/runny and regular. However the last couple of days she's really been straining more so than usual and I'd say about half of her poos have become quite dry and 'bitty', like I'm wiping lots of dried bits off her when I nappy change and theres not much else in the nappy. But she will still do 2 or 3 normal poos too.

Is this constipation or dehydration or is it normal as she gets older? If not what else could it be? There's no pellets that is stereotypical of constipation and all I keep reading online is that constipation is very rare in bf babies. I'd be surprised if it's dehydration as she's feeding normally if not more so this week. Other than the straining and discomfort she seems well otherwise, but the discomfort is definitely worsening.

Any advice? I will contact my health visitor too but just wondered if I should be worried or if it is fairly normal. I know the trapped wind is normal at this age but it's the increased straining and drier stools I'm a bit concerned about.

Cmpa can cause constipation and general stomach issues.

Make sure you read up on symptoms of intersusseption too. It doesn't sound at all like that but worth being aware of.

If you're in the U.K. in this heat it could just be that she needs an extra feed. Try feeding her every 2 hours in the day till the heat subsides.

Yeah I thought that may be the most likely reason. Will do that and it's due to get a bit cooler over the next few days so will see if things change again.
