Excessive whining - please help

Hello all, this is my first post here so please don’t mind if there seems to be etiquette that I’m not following yet.

I’m a first time mum to a baby girl who turned 5 weeks today. She is normally a fairly content baby and has both a whinge cry and a proper cry, but rarely ever does her proper cry unless she is super hungry. But for the past few days, she has been constantly doing her whinge cry when she’s awake, in a way she’s done previously when she’s been really uncomfortable or overstimulated, except right now we are at home Sad she spits up a LOT, after every feed and in between regardless of whether we burp her, this never used to bother her but it seems to have started to more than it did now and I wondered if it could be to do with that, but the whining is not just around feeds it’s literally whenever she is awake. She is also a very hungry baby, she’s mix fed but feeds better with formula since she tends to fall asleep within 5 mins of a breastfeed. She spits up with both but it’s worse with formula. HV said we could be over feeding her leading to her being sick so we give her a dummy when we think she’s rooting for comfort but she still spits up/vomits.

I also wondered whether it could be the heatwave since she does seem to be quite hot and clammy, kicks any type of blanket off herself, but we are running a fan and even at 24 or 25 degrees she is still not happy at all.

She seems to be soothed with breast but if I keep giving her the boob she vomits.

I really don’t know what to do. I just want my baby girl to be okay Sad can anyone offer any advice?

You can’t over feed a breast feed baby. It’s sound like immature digestive system or reflux. Reflux can’t be developmental and along with immature gut in which case it will get better over time. Breast feeding is best for an immature gut. If she is falling asleep when bf perhaps the issue is she is tired. Reflux can also be caused by allergies like CMPA which fits with being more sick after ff. Are you pace feeding when ff?

Hold upright after feeds, research reflux and CMPA and Peak Fussiness around 6wks xx

Wouldn't be using blankets in a heatwave...

I wasn’t sure what paced feeding was, just googled it - when she formula feeds we tend to give her breaks a lot because otherwise she tries to guzzle it all down in one go and ends up choking and spluttering even when holding her in a more upright position! We got size 0 tests with mam bottles but this still happens if we don’t give her frequent breaks and burp mid feed. I did think she might have reflux but because she loves feeding and doesn’t seem uncomfortable when drinking milk I assumed it was wasn’t acid reflux GERD but just GER, but I’m not too sure now. We do hold her upright after feeds but when she still sometimes seems to spit up a little as soon as she lies down. She sounds very gurgly and we have to clear her nose everyday as it gets blocked very quickly.

Not using cellular blankets, just using a very thin cloth over her bare legs just so she has some support as she tends to kick about and wake herself up frequently when she doesn’t use anything at all. Another thing - she keeps waking up often when napping and gets so frustrated - usually she can sleep hours at a time!

Get a 0.5tog sleeping bag for the nights.

Ask you for a feeding assessment from HV and get in touch with your hospitals infant feeding team before 6 weeks as they only look after babes until 6wks old xx

It sounds like reflux to me - grizzling because of pain, soothed by feeding but lots of spit ups. My baby was the same - omeprazole really helped him a lot.
