Grizzling during feeds, need suggestions?

Wondering if anyone could help me and suggest or give advice.

My little one is now 6 weeks old and for the last couple of weeks, he has been very grizzly during the feeds and it's happening on every feed. I've spoken to a health visitor who suggested it is colic and to try Aptamil Comfort. I have started him on the formula but are not seeing a difference really - but have only started it a couple of days ago. To be honest I feel the formula has made the grizzling slightly worse and has been more sicky with the formula.

My little one has never been a sicky baby. He would maybe bring up his milk once a day, roughly, and the rest would be normal spit up when he was on the normal aptamil formula. Since the comfort, he has brought up his milk a few times a day. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue with formula?

I'm also curious if it might be silent reflux but unsure as I can't tell. Since he was two weeks old, he has always seemed a bit uncomfortable and was put down to trapped wind and belly pain.

Thank you for reading Smile

What bottles do you have? My son was the same and we moved him up a teet. He used to get frustrated because he couldn't drink quick enough. He would pull in loads of air and then be in pain. If you think hes worse since the change of milk I would give it 7 days and see from there. If hes still unsettled I would revert back to his old milk and perhaps go up a teet. My son was always about a month and a half in front of the recommended change over. So he moved to teat 1 around 2 months, teat 2 around 5 months and so on. The age is just recommended. Worth a shot. Regarding reflux, my son had reflux terribly and still has it at 17 months. The signs I remember were itchy nose, constantly grabbing at his face, always seemed to have a runny nose, he would look like he was chewing and would pull a very sour looking face. I remember these well because I've always suffered from acid more so when pregnant and when acid comes up in to my throat its such a sour awful taste. The things I found that helped were infant gavison prescribed by doctor. Made my boy badly constipated at first but once we were past that he thrived. He had up to 6 sachets a day. We also kept him up for right for 15 mins or so after a feed and would again raise his cot. Hope this helps xx

Thanks for getting back to me. We are using the MAM bottles at the moment and was on a 0 or 1 teat for the normal aptamil formula. With the comfort formula, he is constantly on a 1 teat occasionally moving to a 2, as they recommended a medium to the fast-flowing teat. We thought this could have been the case before the new formula and it never worked, and with the Comfort formula, it just seems he was uncomfortable after a few gulps of milk.

Not sure if a milk allergy could be the cause but there aren't any physical symptoms I can see such as rashes etc..

He always touches his face with his hands and sometimes tries to pull on it, which we try to avoid him scratching himself. When he does cry and grizzle, he arches back and kicks his legs out, sometimes pulling the legs in, but more kicking them out. This concerns me because I feel he is in pain.

I agree with leaving him a full seven days, unless things host worse but I wouldn't swap back to his old formula. There have been quite a few posters whose babies have been unsettled on Aptamil, maybe try Hipp Oraganic instead?

Has the HV suggested the possibility of Cow's Milk Protein Allergy at all?

The health visitor hasn't mentioned any kind of allergy. Only suggested Colic, which has lead to the Comfort formula.

The doctor thought my son had a cows milk allergy so we went on to some prescribed formula and nothing changed so we moved him back to cows milk and introduced infant gaviscon and it really helped.

I have arranged to speak to a GP to get face to face checks up with them, so they check over my little one. With COVID causing things to shut, could have done with a walk-in baby clinic. It's hard to get hold of a health visitor, as they try not to come out unless they have to. Hopefully, the GP can help or narrow down the reason

Update : Went and spoke to a GP today. Explained everything to them and they came back with either Colic or Silent Reflux. They completely ruled out an allergy issue. They did agree to what most you have said and to give the formula ago and see how he handles it but also prescribed Infant Gaviscon for the reflux, hopefully, this will calm my little one

Good luck and really hope it helps. It helped us massively. My doctor told us to try it for a solid 2 weeks before we see any changes. Baby will be constipated at first but once you get passed that stage and baby is used to them you should hopefully see some improvement. Xx

It might be worth adding Dentinox to the bottle as well.

Personally I would do one thing at once so you rule out what works and what dosent.
