Crawling question

Do babies typically learn to crawl from tummy or sitting? Seeing no signs of it here and wondering what to look out for. Will she move on to all fours from sitting up or push up on to knees from tummy? Sorry might be silly question but first time mum suffering some severe milestone anxiety

My DD started army crawling from being on her tummy, so pulling herself along with her elbows. Once she got confident with the crawling, she started going from sitting to crawling position. Soon after she learned to sit from being in the crawling position. She was almost 11 months when she started army crawling.

My girls crawls before they could sit so they learnt from their tummies.

Normally from their tummy, but they're all different. Some don't crawl at all and instead 'bum shuffle' from sitting. Or just get up and walk.

DramaAlpaca · 20/07/2021 20:52

All three of mine went from sitting onto all fours. They learned to crawl from there, but all of them crawled backwards before they worked out how to go forwards. All of them were eight months.

Toottootdrivers · 20/07/2021 20:54

My DS started commando crawling on his tummy at about 9 months. Took him a while to work out how to get onto all fours and took even longer to work out how to get back into a sitting position. Think he was about 11 months

Divineswirls · 20/07/2021 20:54

My DS wouldn't sit or crawl for ages. He suddenly started to wiggle around on his back and wound end up under tables and the TV stand.
And then just like he started walking on his first birthday

Twizbe · 20/07/2021 20:58

I honestly don't remember, but both mine didn't crawl until 11 months.

With my eldest I had so many people try to 'help' or make me feel there was something f wrong. There wasn't, he just took his time.

With my youngest I batted it all away by saying she was just like her brother.

bruffin · 20/07/2021 20:59

DS never crawled properly, he just pulled himself around by his elbows and got up and walked at 10months, he didnt bum shuffle either

DD started the same way but crawled properly at 9 months and walked at 13 months

ragged · 20/07/2021 21:04

Mine also crawled long before they could sit, 5 months?

ivfgottwins · 20/07/2021 21:06

Sort of went from a sitting position to hands down on the floor (but still sitting on her bum) - took ages to get her to actually crawl - I found plonking one of my good tempered (and lazy) cats in-front of her was the incentive she needed to actually move 🤣

Freecuthbert · 20/07/2021 21:16

Not all babies crawl, so try not to worry about it too much. How old is your DD? Mine was belly crawling for a while, also when she tried to crawl it was pushing her backwards which was funny. She would also rock back and forth on her knees. Then one day she just started crawling, both from sitting up and lying on her tummy. But she had already been attempting to crawl for 2 months before this. Every baby is different though!

PeonyTime · 20/07/2021 21:16

Mine went from lying on the stomach.
We used to call it catterpillering. They would stick their bum in the air, then flop their front half forward.

Crawling isnt a milestone tho. Not all kids do it.

Lazypuppy · 20/07/2021 21:17

My dd was from sitting but she didn't crawl until 14 months, it was bliss 😂

cookiesandcreamm · 20/07/2021 21:20

My DS started from being on his tummy.
Also went backwards for awhile.
8 months.
As others they do it when their ready or not at all.

Freecuthbert · 20/07/2021 21:39

Just thought I'd add, now my daughter is crawling it is a nightmare! She gets everywhere and to everything and it feels like I can't turn around for 5 seconds, so enjoy the time your DD isn't crawling.

mindutopia · 20/07/2021 21:42

Both of mine did it from tummy. Lots of tummy time is good.

coldsandinsleepingbags · 20/07/2021 22:19

Hopefully you're seeing from all the responses so far how many different approaches there are as well as huge differences in ages that things happen! My DD started cruising (walking while holding on to furniture etc) at about 9 months having never made any effort to crawl or bum shuffle at all. She had been keen to walk while holding hands from about 8 months (back breaking!). Once she learned to pull herself upright to cruise, about 2 weeks later she just started crawling one day in order to get to something to then pull herself up on so that she could cruise. Walked without holding anything at 11.5 months. So hardly any crawling or bum shuffling at all really!

My son is just starting to crawl. He does it from his tummy - props himself up on his hands and then bends his knees. He can sort of get into a crawling position from sitting but it’s a bit of a kamikaze face dive at the moment. He’s 7 months.

Cloudninenine · 21/07/2021 04:10

Also just to add - not all babies crawl on their own steam, but it’s good to encourage them to try even when they have other means of getting around. Crawling is important for building spatial awareness, for developing their vestibular sense, and for coordination.
