Nanny process

We are in the very very early stages of looking for a nanny and have been using the childcare app to post an 'ad'. We've had some replies but truth be told I don't know how hiring a nanny works? Could somebody run through the process for me?
Additionally those of you who have/had a nanny how did you 'vet' them per say?

First child and very new to this!!!

Maybe it would be easier to go through an agency?

First you need to decide what you want in a nanny. Decide on hours, job description and pay (in gross)
Then narrow your applicants down to 1 or 2 to interview.
Do you need them to be Ofsted registered?
Make sure they have a DBS check, insurance and a paediatric first aid certificate.
Get details of at least two previous employers and call them to check references.

You will need to register as an employer with HMRC, deduct tax and set up an employee pension scheme.
I would use a payroll company like Nanny Tax (there are several) to do all that for you.
Ensure you understand your responsbilities regarding tax, pension, maternity leave, sick pay, redundancy, holiday pay.
Make sure you have a written contract.

@zoeydollie thanks that's really helpfully 100% clueless here!

What is it you actually need the nanny to do (live in/live out, 40/50/60 hours)?
And what is your budget?

Go through an agency
So much easier

squiddybear · 18/07/2021 19:57

@zoeydollie 2 days per week 18 hours in total. It seems that most are £12ph from what we have seen so around that

Is £12 net or gross?
Remember to budget for your NI, pension contributions, food, activity kitty & mileage/travel too.

I recruited mine directly through childcare.co.uk but use nanny tax for contract, payroll, pension etc. So far pretty unimpressed with them after they got her annual leave hours wrong Hmm had to reissue the contract after it was signed.

I used a company called PAYE for Nannies for the contract and all the payroll. They were ace.
