Anyone else hate applying suncream?

I know it’s absolutely necessary, but fecking hell it’s a horrible job!

I hate the worry that you’ve missed a bit, the stickiness and greasiness (I’ve tried most brands and am yet to find one that isn’t both of these things to a greater or lesser degree), the struggle to apply it whilst DS squirms and cries and the fact that he will inevitably rub his eyes when I’ve applied it to his hands.

Hate the stuff!

I would agree with the sponge idea. I discovered it far too late to help with the toddler stage but my DS who is 11 still has some sensory dislikes and he is much happier using a sponge to rub it in. I rub my own in with a sponge too now it spreads more evenly somehow and I find it just less yucky!

@JJSS123

Eucalyptus oil will remove sun cream stains from clothes by the way! I just order it from eBay soak the stain with the oil and then wash like normal, I saw it on this morning once 😂
I think I love you Grin

I use a once a day product. It’s changed my life. Especially the face cream as I hate looking shiny.

Use the spray aerosol ones!!! No need to touch at all!

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 17/07/2021 16:42

None of the once a day ones are reliable - sadly. They're fine as a normal sunblock, but they don't last all day. Australia has banned sunblocks from marketing themselves as once a day because it's unsafe.

Toddlerteaplease · 17/07/2021 18:21

The best one I found was Piz Buin mousse. But it seems to be discontinued.

ChikiTIKI · 17/07/2021 18:37

Yeah it's so greasy, sticky, horrible. Everything sticks to it. Makes hair all greasy and rank looking.

Warmduscher · 17/07/2021 18:43

@pastabest

I rarely bother.

I make the kids wear massive floppy hats instead. If they don't wear them they have to play in the shade.

Surely a hat doesn’t cover their legs and feet? How do you stop them from burning?
Mollymalone123 · 17/07/2021 18:54

Think the uv wear kids can get now are brilliant/ you can also buy some nice stuff for grown ups too.
I honestly think we all need to just be indoors or in the shade and not rely totally on sunblock-
I have just been diagnosed with malignant melanoma and my toe was amputated on weds-I’m off work for two months and having had some lymph nodes removed to see if the cancer has spread.My sister died years ago from the same thing.If people only realised how melanoma is beginning to take over to be the sixth most common cancer I think here in the UK we would do far more to avoid the sun! Mine started because I had a v small mole on a toe for years-I put sun cream on but it never crossed my mind when I was out gardening to apply it to my toes when I wore sandals

NotMyCat · 17/07/2021 18:56

Spray aerosol ones! I use them on myself

LordOfTheOnionRings · 17/07/2021 19:01

We have a spray on from La Rochey Posay from boots. Spray ons are a game changer

When I hear other parents moaning about suncream I don't know whether to feel hard done to that because of DS's eczema we have to apply emollient cream - just as greasy and stingy in eyes, has to go everywhere including where covered in clothes - up to four times a day, or whether to feel blessed that, I think because of this, he doesn't really make a fuss about sun cream. So can I recommend putting it on four times a day and all year round as a solution, OP? They get used to it after a mere couple of years of having a tantrum every time!

ChrissyPlummer · 17/07/2021 19:13

UltraSun sport one is clear, non-greasy and doesn’t give me spots. Also more waterproof than most. I don’t have DC but this works for me. I hate the greasy creams that give me spots but this doesn’t and dries really quickly. Never noticed any staining either.

Second the self tanning mitt to apply sunscreen. I use it on myself and kids and it makes everything so much easier

SpindleWhorl · 17/07/2021 19:18

I've reported the sick troll.

Morgan12 · 17/07/2021 19:20

This was genuinely one of my deciding factors when we were considering moving to Australia. I loathe it.

This is awful, I am so sorry Flowers
User0ne · 17/07/2021 19:31

We all wear p20 (3yrs, 4yrs and adults- not our 3m old). It goes on the morning before we get dressed, lasts all day and doesn't come off in water.

My 3yr old still isn't keen but will tolerate sitting still because it only happens once a day. It also works out much cheaper than stuff you have to reapply

Mollymalone123 · 17/07/2021 19:31

@Shirleyphallus thank you x

Tidypidy · 17/07/2021 19:35

We use factor 50 Banana Boat spray on all of us. You don't need to rub it in so it's just spray and go! We reapply after bathing and at least every two hours if out all day. It doesn't irritate my eczema prone DD or cause spots.

Anyone else hate applying suncream?
AwFeebs · 17/07/2021 19:40

I was told to use a makeup brush to rub it in. Not tried it yet though.

nutellamagnet · 17/07/2021 19:47

I'd echo the support for altruist. Spf 50 and non greasy - it's the only spf I can stand on my face and doesn't immediately sweat off again.

NotMyCat · 17/07/2021 19:56

@Tidypidy that one has been a nightmare to find online for some reason recently
I'm pale (blue) and wore it for a 2-3hr horse ride on a boiling hot day, at lunch time. Not a pink mark to be seen, it's excellent
