Newborn not pooing

Can anyone advise what to do for 7 week old (just) apparently constipated? Baby's gone from a dirty nappy nearly every change to almost 48 hours without one. Fine in every other way, and plenty of wet nappies.

Google says cooled boiled water, but I wasn't sure if 6/7weeks is still too young for this?

No change in milk etc. Can't get through to GP and only wanted to ask advice over the phone anyway not faff with an appointment!!

it's quite hot today where I am so yes to cooled, boiled water.

MumOfThreeToBe2021 · 16/07/2021 16:37

Yea hot here today too!! So it's not too young? How much should I offer him? He's having roughly 4oz bottles at the moment.

Have tried cycling legs but not sure how to massage tummy and didn't want to make it worse!

He's fine in himself I just wasn't sure how long to leave it before it became a real worry. Especially when the norm was being an absolute poo machine!!

Mine were breadtfed but Dd1 went every 3 days, Dd2 every 5! (No we didn't leave the house until they had gone as nothing contained it!)

Just gently rub his tummy in clockwork xircles and tes to cooled boiled water. Just a little

FF babies here. I wouldn't be too concerned after 48 hours, especially if you're getting plenty of wet nappies. I wouldn't give water without medical advice to such a small baby - just keep feeding as usual, tummy massage, bicycle legs. A bottle of ready made can often help if you usually use powder formula.

jenjen517 · 16/07/2021 16:59

I wouldn't be wasting GP's time if baby is otherwise well. Paeds won't be concerned until they've gone 7 days without pooing. 48 hours is considered completely normal.

You could give a small amount of cool boiled water, but don't drop a milk feed, the water is in addition to babes usual feeds.

jenjen517 · 16/07/2021 17:00

You could try some massage. Just make sure you go clockwise and never anti-clockwise. But be reassured it's normal to not poo for this amount of time.

Uramaki · 16/07/2021 17:02

Can you call your health visitor? I was told they don't really worry until it gets to 4-5 days if baby is otherwise well.

Uramaki · 16/07/2021 17:03

And as PP said 2 days is normal

MumOfThreeToBe2021 · 16/07/2021 17:05

That was my concern, he just seems very small for anything other than milk, even though it seems it's ok!!

Also probably should have mentioned he was born prematurely (is a twin). That's why he's combi fed as it was difficult to establish in early days, but it's the same formula he's always had. DD was EBF so never had this problem! I also wouldn't worry if it wasn't such a change from his norm

Ah few x posts!!

Thanks all for advice - so reassured it's not a worry. Was just worried he'd gone from every change to nothing. It seemed a very minor thing to ask GP about but knew I could rely on Mumsnet!!!

If you ever have any doubts if anything is normal or you are worried the health visitor or 111 are really good at helping too :)

Congratulations on the little one!

@Uramaki thank you v much!!

Feel daft sometimes with little things like this, like I should know the answer to these things by now!
