Red spots all over baby's body - any idea on what it might be?

Hi there,

My 7 month old got a cluster of red spots (small, look pus filled) on his legs a couple of days ago. Yesterday they spread to his tummy (maybe a dozen of them), and then this morning he woke up with 20 or 30 on his face and neck. The original ones on his legs have started to sort of dry out.

GP has seen a picture and has said it is 'unusual but not concerning' 🤷‍♂️, but I'm not quite convinced.

He has moderate eczema all the time, worst on his neck, and he also has a runny nose right now (seems like just a normal cold?). No temp, and fairly active although grumpy and not eating much.

Could it be impetigo/staph infection/infected eczema/something else?

All advice gratefully received as am a first time mum and just muddling our way through!

Chicken pox? Looks the part. They also come up worse in warm areas. Poor DS had lots in the nappy area and areas like neck fold.

Rashes are rarely anything very serious, OP, but I'd get that looked at again tomorrow. Could be heat rash/hand foot and mouth/virus/CP/lots of things, but always good to get someone to tae another look and they won't mind. It's good that your GP has already seen them. The fold on the neck there makes me think it could well be a heat rash, but I'm not a medic. Nobody ever minds taking another look at a baby, so don't feel like you are being a pain if you ask for another appointment etc.

Almost looks like a really bad case of hand, foot and mouth?

oh and keep an eye on his general wellbeing, OP especially fluid intake. It's fine if they don't eat a lot when they have a virus, but dehydration is a different thing. As long as he's okay but grumpy then things are normally all right. Lethargy and being "off" especially if your mum sense alerts -- then have him seen asap. Go by your mum instinct. Just want to reiterate again that no-one at 111 /GP/ out of hours etc. ever minds seeing a baby, it is never an inconvenience.

I was going to say this. DC1 had it very bad, looked very similar.

The GP actually sent us to A&E as a precaution because he said there was a slim chance it could be a rare type of eczema that requires IV medication.

At that age I would be insisting on a f2f appointment.

Out of interest, how did they rule out chicken pox?

Bobholll · 15/07/2021 19:53

I also think hand foot & mouth.. there’s been an outbreak of chicken pox & HFM at DD’s nursery & she’s got what pretty certain in pox. But I have been frantically googling what the spots of each look like. Those look like HFM. Small, fairly flat blisters. HFM can appear anywhere on the body, my friends kid is covered head to toe but obviously most commonly on the hands, feet & mouth area. Does he have any blisters on his tongue? Is he itchy?

Equally, could be the start of pox but they look quite small..

Blippibloppi · 15/07/2021 20:16

I'd say HFM too. I'd push to be seen in person - I'm fully pro online and phone consultations given the current situation but it's not good enough for a baby with a mystery rash.

Completely disagree with the first bit but agree with the second. I’d insist on getting him seen face to face OP.

Thanks so much all. Gave me the confidence to go back an insist he was seen. He's been given a diagnosis of tonsillitis and probable chicken pox. Snotty and spotty! Full marks to @SummerHouse
☺️

Out of interest @NakedAttraction what was the type of eczema. My LO has eczema quite badly also.

Poor chap. You did the right thing. I wonder if tonsillitis, maybe a temp caused the rash. Get well soon little man. Flowers

NakedAttraction · 16/07/2021 13:27

@LiquoriceAllsortsCandySticks I’m sorry I really can’t remember. Turned out to be just a very bad case of hand foot + mouth.

Hope he feels better soon Flowers

No worries! Thanks anyway. Bloomin love Mumsnet
