Terrified of baby overheating ... please reassure me!

I'm an anxious new mum so please bear with me.

I'm so scared of my baby overheating - the thermometer in our bedroom currently is reading 24 degrees and I have the fab blasting but it's making little difference! Baby is in just a nappy and 0.5 tog sleeping bag.

Will she be ok? Confused

Yes

Rtmhwales · 14/07/2021 22:06

She will be fine. Absolutely fine.

I took DS on an eight week trip when he was a couple months old, through Southeast Asia where the temps were much higher and humid than that. We hiked in it and he slept in it too, just in a diaper and light sleep sac. Never had an issue.

Tons of countries are much hotter without air conditioning or even fans.

She will be fine. Don't point the fan at her. Babies survive very well in very hot countries. Keep her drinking her milk and don't worry. 24 is a reasonable temperature inside.

PepperPepperMan · 14/07/2021 22:06

Mine are 19yrs, 17yrs and 13yrs old.

All fine in your set up - go to bed and get some sleep 😊Flowers

Cloudninenine · 14/07/2021 22:06

She’ll be absolutely fine, don’t worry!

Cheerio21 · 14/07/2021 22:07

She'll be fine, hope these help you

When I had DS in the 2018 summer heatwave, my flat was 30 degrees. I did everything to get air moving and he slept naked with a Muslin over him but was fine. 24 is ok honestly- now go get some sleep ;)

newmummy21 · 14/07/2021 22:09

Thank you all! I'll try to relax and get some sleep. I've read far too much stuff about how unsafe it is for babies to get too hot, I've now worried myself sick. Doesn't help we have one of those gro egg thermometers that turns red with a sad face when it's too hot - the bloody thing is never happy, its always saying it's too hot in here which makes me panic!

I had a June baby and remember being so worried about this during those first few months. It was 32 degrees the week I brought her home from hospital!

She will be completely fine. Check her temperature every now and then (hand on the back of neck or stomach) and if she feels very hot to touch then remove the sleeping bag. I also used to put an ice block wrapped in a muslin in the bottom of the cot and that really helped to bring the temperature down. At 24 degrees though I always found at least a thin sheet/bag was needed.
And depending on age you should make sure she is waking up regularly enough for feeds so she keeps hydrated. If she’s hot she’s more likely to sleep for longer stretches and miss feeds.

mayblossominapril · 14/07/2021 22:13

I put mine to sleep in just a vest and in the early hours when it’s cooled down I put a cotton cellular blanket on her.
I make sure she’s feeding often and think that babies are fine in hot countries.

LittleBearPad · 14/07/2021 22:13

I threw the groegg behind a chair. Bloody thing - judging me and my ‘red hot’ bedroom.

Your baby will be absolutely fine.

Congratulations

Thank you. She's 3 months and wakes roughly every 3-4 hrs for a feed usually.

I cool my room to 24 degrees with my baby, and have him sleep in a light onesie. Outside it’s 28-35 degrees and humid depending on the day, so I only take him out for short bursts, but he’s fine, he just has a bit more milk when we come home. I’m sure your DC will be ok. Hide the stressy thermometer! ;-)

Thank you.

Yes I'm tempted to throw mine out the window too! It causes more anxiety than being helpful!

Think logically. Remember that babies are born in countries where the heat is forty-odd degrees every single day, frequently in situations where there isn't exactly home aircon. Do those babies routinely keel over? Nope. Babies are pretty tough.

ChocOrange1 · 14/07/2021 22:20

I didn't use the groegg with my second child. You can tell when the room is hot or cold, and the red light just makes you feel stressed.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 14/07/2021 22:21

This time last year i had a 7 month old and when the temp in her room hit 31 i moved her downstairs in a travel cot. She gave me a slightly confused look and went back to sleep. No ill effects then or since.
Think how many babies are born and thrive in parts of the world where 24 would be considered “a bit nippy” Grin

riotlady · 14/07/2021 22:22

They’ll be absolutely fine, don’t worry. Just think about how many warm summers the UK has had where it’s been over 24 degrees and all the babies that were fine, never mind the babies in other countries where it’s regularly much hotter than that.

shazzz1xx · 14/07/2021 22:22

My 23 month old just sleeps in a nappy and a vest

parsnipsnotsprouts · 14/07/2021 22:28

Mine has more on than that and it’s 24.4 but she won’t sleep in a sleeping bag or too cold

QueenKong101 · 14/07/2021 22:30

Both of my children were born in Asia where 30+ degree nights are really common. I used to put them down in a nappy and vest, or an unlined cotton sleeping bag and they were perfectly fine.

Uramaki · 14/07/2021 22:32

Can always take her out sleeping back if you think she is too warm but I'd be careful with the fan, don't point it at baby

Aria2015 · 14/07/2021 22:34

Oh, I get this! My first was a summer baby and even now with my second I worry but, I have always found the recommended togs /layers to be off for my two. Both of mine have always slept better with an extra layer to the recommended and wake up cold when I don't. Our room is 24 tonight and my baby has a full sleepsuit on and a 0.5 tog sleep sack that I'll probably change to 1 tog when she wakes for a feed. Your baby will be fine in what you've got them in.

mineofuselessinformation · 14/07/2021 22:39

Many years ago, my very sensible health visitor told me to stick my finger down the back of their neck to get an idea of actual temperature. It works.
