16 month old breath holding

This is the first time it’s happened!

He wasn’t going to sleep so brought him downstairs in his sleeping bag where he made a bee line for his sand table, I quickly gave him something else he usually loves & removed the sand table, putting it in another room.

Well, he opened his mouth like he was about to cry and.... never did. Held his breath with his mouth wide open and head flung back, but no cry came out, until he was eventually turning blue in the face and mouth!! It was terrifying! In my shock and to just try and make it stop I took him to the sand table but by that point he had just about come around, but his eyes were a bit off for a few seconds.

He’s now happily lying on me watching Frozen & is sleepy.

I have just read on the NHS that it’s very normal but that was the scariest experience in our 16 months together by a long shot.

Anyone else had this happen?

Blow on his face

Yes ive had it happen with mine the scariest child I knew was when I was in labour with my first the baby in the cubicle next to me was holding his breath at one day old literally like a tantrum the nurse was in and out all night long blowing in his face reassuring the mum it will be fine he is just a bit wilful see he stops going it when you blow in his face sharply I overheard the nurses later saying the poor girl better have a supportive family or she isnt sleeping for a very long time

My niece does this weekly, until she faints. She’s 2! She’s been checked by lots of GPS and specialists and they say it’s normal.

Yup. My son's done it twice - thought he was having a seizure the first time he did it and had to talk myself down! Thankfully blowing in his face did the trick and he started breathing again and was just very confused about what had happened! Confused

Same here, and mine's only 6 weeks old! Terrifying the first time. In fact I started a thread on here last week, and received the same advice. Blowing on her face really works!

TwinsAndTrifle · 14/07/2021 20:05

As PP says, blow in face. My girl twin (18mths) does this, and I blow in her open mouth. It stops immediately.

Thanks! Will definitely try that next time.

Yes my son has just turned 2 and has been having breath holding spells since he was 2 months old. He usually gets them when he hurts himself and is really tired. He let's out a scream but doesn't inhale again and then passes out very briefly. Blowing in his face doesn't work for us really. It's really scary every time but he doesn't get them very often anymore. I've spoken to the doctor and they wernt concerned. They said is they became really frequent or longer lasting they would do further tests.

My 3 month old started doing it, we called paramedics as we were so scared (it happened every time we lay him down!) So we held him upright all through the night until paramedics arrived. We lay him down and he obligingly held his breathe…they watched totally relaxed and said it was normal and didn’t bat an eyelid which was weirdly reassuring.
He’s stopped it now but blowing worked as everyone said.
