Newborn baby gassy / farting pain

Hi my newborn is 3 weeks old and in the last few days she seems very gassy and cried and squirms before she farts , it seems like she's in a lot of discomfort and seems to be farting a lot. I've tried bicycle legs and rubbing her belly but it's the fact she gets so worked up and cries and squirms so much I'm wondering if this is normal ?? She's breastfed and I haven't changed my diet so not sure if it's something I am eating or doing wrong .

This is so normal in the early weeks, OP. Their digestive systems are so small and brand new, they feel every tiny bubble as varying levels of discomfort or pain. It does improve, usually from about 10 weeks. It just gets better and better from there for many people. But the first few weeks are notorious for digestive discomfort and 'colic'. Try laid back breastfeeding/biological nurturing as a great position to feed in. Lying on you, tummy to tummy sems to help with it. The bicycle legs usually helps a lot too. We used to sit and do it for long periods with our in the early days.

In my experience it’s totally normal and they grow out of it around 6-8 weeks.

You can film it and show it to the health visitor to get some reassurance. It’s hard seeing them in discomfort but their little tummies take a while to adjust to milk.

It is normal but also can be worrying when you’re a new mum! It’s just them getting used to eating/being in the world. It helped for me to keep them sort of upright after feeding, maybe that will help?

Have you tried Infacol before feeds? My midwife recommended it, and it does seem to help. It works by combining small gas bubbles into one so that the gas is easier to pass.

@tofuschnitzel just tried it earlier today and she had a big poo explosion so taking that as a good sign ! Thank you

@Kanaloa thank you yes it's all so new and can be scary so good to know this is normal . I've been feeding her in a more upright position today , we usually do lying down position in bed so maybe I'll stop that position and see how we get on

@TerryRose I have an 8 week old and she's just coming to the end of that phase since last week. Hang in there.
