Did you wake your newborn to feed?

DD2 is 3 weeks old and loves her sleep! She was born at 39 weeks and is gaining weight well (bottle fed).

During the day she can be hungry every 2/3 hours, however like most newborns she loves to sleep!

Currently waking her every 3 hours during the day to feed and every 4 at night (if she doesn't wake herself). Is this ok? She was so tired last night and took ages to feed.

Surely going longer than 4 hours would be too long?

Completely different to DD1 who was like clockwork 😂.

I would during the day but not at night because I like sleeping.

I’ve always thought that once they had got back to their birth weight and were putting on weight you didn’t have to wake them to feed at night.

Not after they regained their birth weight. Not that this was an issue I had very often with my girls.

No - mine were poor sleepers, and once they were asleep I left them asleep!

I had to wake DS every 3 hours as he lost too much of his birth weight, so I only did it on medical advice! I was also under the impression that once they had gained their birth weight back you no longer needed to wake them.

We stopped waking DS up to feed once was over birth weight.

Also only till they regained their birth weight. That was what HV told me.

I have a 15 week old and woke her up every 4 h for the first 8 ish weeks as her weight gain wasn’t great. Now she’s shot up from the 25th to 91st centile I leave her to sleep and she does 2 x 6h stretches.

megletthesecond · 13/07/2021 08:18

Yes, in the day time for the first few weeks. Mine never lost weight though. I was too stressed to just leave her to sleep for long and I had masses of milk.

SheABitSpicyToday · 13/07/2021 08:19

No I never woke mine

Ihaveoflate · 13/07/2021 08:20

No, but I didn't need to because she never slept that long! I probably would have woken her up after 4 hours in the daytime but never at night
