What age did you stop using a sling?

Just curious really as I'm about to sell ours. DS is now 15 months and we stopped using it when he was about 7/8 months. Can you really carry on much longer than that or do they just get too heavy?

About 1 with my eldest and currently still going at 8 months with the youngest. Both 90th+ centilers so pretty heavy and I'm only short so struggle a bit with being able to fit the on my body once they get too tall. DC1 never liked a back carry which was a bit annoying.

sittingonacornflake · 12/07/2021 11:59

I upgraded the Tula carrier to a toddler Tula and Ds is now 3.5 and I'd carry on if he let me (he won't anymore). Think they also do pre schooler carriers.

bunanarama · 12/07/2021 12:02

Carried my eldest regularly to nearly 2. Youngest is 18 months and in the sling regularly and on occasions eldest is in it at 3.5. There are so many different slings out there, we now use toddler ones which can be adjusted between the two kids. They weigh 12 and 15kg so think they are pretty average

Stretchy wrap until 6 months, ring sling on hip or back from 6 months until around 18 months, ergo carrier from 12 months to 2 years.

T0rt0ise · 12/07/2021 13:01

Still using a sling (Tula explore) with 15 month old plus a frame carrier for longer walks.

RedMarauder · 12/07/2021 13:05

About 16 months when she decided she wanted to walk and run every where like big children.

Though she then spent another 3-4 months sitting on my shoulders when she got tired as she refused to let me put her in any form of sling/wrap/carrier before getting her a balance bike and scooter.

ReggaetonLente · 12/07/2021 13:07

About 2 and that was only because my bump with baby no2 got too big to do it comfortably - I will probably carry no2 for longer! But I'm in a country where slings are the norm - lots of mothers don't even have a pram here, certainly not before 6 months.

CMOTDibbler · 12/07/2021 13:12

I carried ds until he was 4 - obviously not all the time, but if we were out all day he'd have a nap or a rest.

ForkedIt · 12/07/2021 13:15

Around 15 months with the Tula but that’s because I got pregnant and have hyperemesis in my pregnancies so couldn’t imagine anything much worse for nausea than having a toddler tied to my torso!

mindutopia · 12/07/2021 13:18

Used a woven wrap up until close to 2 years. And then a carrier until probably 3.5 or a bit more. They get quite heavy at 2-3, but realistically, if you are going to walk long distances and can't use a pushchair, it's the only option.

Queenfreak · 12/07/2021 13:23

I have a toddler sling for my 4 year old, but will need a preschool one soon I think.
It's not used often, but it's very comfy, and I barely feel her weight.
I don't want to use the car on the school run (it's just over a mile each way) but cant guarantee she will cooperate after a day at school (at least in the first half term)

Caspianberg · 12/07/2021 13:27

I carry 14 month still most days. Currently using ergo, but have my eye on the Tula toddler for when he’s bigger. He’s about 10-11kg, and on 90th for height. I’m pretty short. Seems fine.

LittleRa · 12/07/2021 13:27

I carried my DD on by back with an ergo galaxy u til she was 3.5. The max weight for it was 40lbs. I found it much more comfortable to back carry once she was heavier, than front- like wearing a back pack. The weight is distributed more evenly.

SpikeDearheart · 12/07/2021 13:28

Sometimes sling my 17 month old when we're out and about and he needs the closeness. Think I'm going to need to upgrade the sling soon if we're going to carry on though!

Jujujuly · 12/07/2021 13:31

Probably about 14/15 months in the back carry for long walks with DC1. 8 month old DD2 is still carried in it all the time.

BingIsAMassiveTwat · 12/07/2021 13:32

18 months with DD1, until I was pregnant again, still front and back carry DD2 in the connecta at 17 months. Weight limit is huge so plenty of time still!

BuffySummersReportingforSanity · 12/07/2021 13:33

I still use mine occasionally for DS2 who is three on long dog walks. He rides on my back very comfortably.

Smarshian · 12/07/2021 13:34

My DD is 4.5 years and I carried her in my Tula last week, although I don’t use it that often now. I sometimes carry DS in it too (he is 3)

Smarshian · 12/07/2021 13:35

To note she is 116cm tall as well (we sometimes get some odd looks but she is very comfortable in it)

PeonyTime · 12/07/2021 13:39

I carried regularly until he was about 9 months, and less of a velcro baby. His younger sibling wasnt so keen, so carried him less.
But I would still sling on occasions aftr that. This DS1 was about 4 the last time I carried him (took a hired toddler sling on holiday for DS2 aged 2.5, but big brother got jealous.....).

If they are going to need a carry, a sling is a great way to make life easier - I'm thinking mainly airports, and certain foreign cities which are not pushchair friendly in the slightest

peaches35 · 12/07/2021 14:24

Interesting… I just use the pram all the time now, but maybe I’ll look into slings for toddlers!

@peaches35 you could try renting a toddler or preschooler sling, maybe from itsaslingthing.co.uk. It can work really well to keep carrying to preschool age - certainly not required, but even now for a fast walk or navigating an airport it can be really helpful to be able to stick DC2 on my back and be hands free.

Littlelegs2 · 12/07/2021 14:38

I tandem carried for quite a while. Then I carried one at a time on my back till around 4 years old.

Caspianberg · 12/07/2021 15:01

I think the sling really will be handy at toddler stage when they are the age they can walk most places but might need a carry occasionally, rather than dragging empty pram around.

I use mine a lot with 1 year old as often places pram isn’t suitable, or some days we are in and out of the car and into shopping trolley at supermarket so sling easier for the odd shops in between. Pram just takes up boot space.

I do use pram also, but more for leisurely flat walks rather than actually getting stuff done

modgepodge · 12/07/2021 16:55

About 15 months. Once she could walk she didn’t like it. I founfher too heavy for a front carry from about a year, and never managed the art of getting her in to the back carry without someone to help, so no use if it was just the two of us.

Now just over 2 and I take a buggy everywhere, tbh I find it useful to carry everything anyway, if using a sling I’d be carrying a change bag, travel potty, plus either an empty sling or a child on my back. I find a buggy easier. But I’m not a hiker and rarely go anywhere that’s not buggy suitable.
