DD1 (3.8) keeps wetting her knickers and I'm sick of it......Help

We started poty training at about 2.4 when I got pregnant. Success came very quickly when naked and took a bit of time getting her used to pants but she did pretty well.
New baby at 2.9 didnt seem to make much difference.

Certainly by age 3 she was fine. And then it started to go downhill about 3 months ago.

She is now 3.8 and I honestly dont know if is too lazy or doesnt know or holds it on so long that she then cant get to the loo.

We have tried over approx 2 week periods.

  • being calm and saying dont worry" - DD: "It's ok Mummy, I'll just get new pants"
  • being angry - DD: "I'm sad"
  • stickers - DD: "Mummy I love stickers but they arent working"
  • sweets - encouraged her to go to the loo even when nothing was there and still accidents.

I have asked her what I can do to help her and she doesnt know.

I dont know what to do....Help

DD2 is 3.7 and still wets her most days, although she can have brilliant days when she is very conscientious and takes herself off to loo without even telling us. If you have tried all those things already, and its not worked, I would just ignore it, leave it, make no fuss and let her get it right in her own time. I worried and ranted and stressed about DD1 when she did this around the same age, and nothing worked, so I just stopped. She is 5 now and never has accidents, so I am not worried about DD2 still wetting hers by the time she starts school. I just let it all go over my head now ! There is no miracle answer in my experience !

A lo who has been dry and then suddenly starts wetting again, could be suffering from a urinary tract infection, worth a check

FrostyGlassSlipper · 24/11/2007 20:24

Chankins - thanks. That does help. I know she'll get there in the end but it's frustrating as I know she can do it.

Littleboo - I did wonder that but as she can go several days without a problem (but then will wet 2-3 times in a day) I dont think it would be an infection.

Frosty - I would still get her checked for an infection. DD1 has had a UTI and the only symptom was wetting... no discolouring of urine, no offensive smell, no complaints of pain from dd.

ProjectTartanArmyIcarus · 24/11/2007 20:31

Had this recently with dd1 similar story. I went overboard on praise for dry knickers and it has resolved.

(did all your ones first though

No idea why but glad it seems to have gone away iyswim.

CarGirl · 24/11/2007 20:37

dd4 is 4.3 - has not had an accident at school AT ALL since starting full time in September and there have been far fewer accidents at home probably one per week. Nothing I tried worked, she just doesn't want to stop doing what she is enjoing to go for a wee then leaves it too late and usually wets herself on the way to the loo.

It would seem that the peer pressure of not wetting herself at school is helping is proving to be a positive thing...... I also think since I stopped commenting on it all it did improve, she knows to put her wet pants in the kitchen (where the soaking bucket is) and go and put dry ones on. She is dry at night and has been for about a year!

FrostyGlassSlipper · 24/11/2007 20:43

notnowbernard - that's interesting. I think I'll give it a futher week with no comment and see if any change. If not then might take her to Drs.

Projecttartanarmyicarus - That's my next plan. Reassuring to see it can work.

Cargirl - that helps me a lot. I guess at the back of my mind this is one of my worries.

My DD is dry at night and has been for about 6 months. It is the day we are struggling with.

notnowbernard · 24/11/2007 21:05

Orinoco - I think I agree with that... the only time dd1(3.11) has had accidents in the last year or so is when she's been coming down with something

whispywhisp · 24/11/2007 21:06

UTI can come and go - I would definitely get her checked because it can cause you to wee with no real prior warning. Does her wee smell strongly? And is it normal colour? IE not too dark?

CarGirl · 24/11/2007 21:52

my dd was treated for some sort of infection sadly it made no difference but it is worth getting it ruled out! My dd doesn't seem to care about being wet and certainly at friends houses thinks it is great to borrow a pair of knickers! Usually it is damp knickers and only infrequently floods, with my dd it is def a bad habit.

FrostyGlassSlipper · 25/11/2007 08:03

Thanks everyone. I will definitely consider the uti - need to do a bit of investigation before I hotfott it to the Dr iykwim

But, I think it may be that she is just more like Cargirl's DD. Often she can take herself totally independently and then sometimes it just seems she cant be bothered.

I have spoken to DH though and we are resolved to ignore and be positive !

I was just about to post the same thing, my DD1 is 3.4yo started potty training at around 2 at her insistence, it has been a battle since day 1, would say there are very few days she is in the same pair of pants all day. But it has been getting worse today she told me she was wet when I picked her up from nursery and she was trousers sopping. Nursery teacher told me she always asks to go and she always goes before she goes in with me. Then she wet her trousers twice and had anotehr change of pants.

I have tried everything too, have tried just ignoring her, threatened to put a nappy back on, treats etc nothing works. I think she is waiting too long or letting go before she's on the toilet. I am hoping it will correct itself but 5+ pant changes a day is wearing me down.

popmum · 26/11/2007 22:40

sympathies. have been through EXACTLY the same with my dd. My advice....

drop all drinks except water and milk. in less than 2 weeks made MASSIVE difference. Def no squash (dilute to taste). I read about this on an incontinence website. Really worked for us

we've now reintroduced fruit drinks to our dd after she was dry for a couple of months and touch wood she is now ok (after 2 years ). She used to have 'dribbles' alll the time

FrostyGlassSlipper · 27/11/2007 07:56

Sweetkitty - we're not that bad but you have have my sympathies!

Popmum - that's really interesting. I may try that.

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 27/11/2007 08:57

popmum - DD1 has always drank loads so I would be hesitant to drop her drinks, she only has water, milk or very dilute fruit juice anyway. I read somewhere that if you limit their drink it means their bladder is never used to being full and this can cause leaking too.

FrostyGlassSlipper · 27/11/2007 09:21

sweetkitty. I dont think popmum is saying limit the volume of drinks, just the type. My DD mainly drinks water and milk but also likes fresh apple juice (not squash). Perhaps it irritates the bladder or something?

OP posts:
sweetkitty · 27/11/2007 09:23

I see what you mean but I doubt that the cause of DD1 dribbles as the juice is very dilute, right enough it is driving me so mad I am willing to try anything.

popmum · 27/11/2007 14:14

yes it is the type of drink rather than the amount - we replaced all fruit drinks with water or milk. Apple juice I think can for some people act as a directic (sp?). Ribena as well.

some info here

and on a forum here (look for Daytime wetting. A solution? )

good luck!

whispywhisp · 27/11/2007 16:53

I've heard it said by a health visitor that juice/squash drinks (and tea/coffee) go right through you whereas water and milk tend to be absorbed by the body better and used to replenish the water in the body. I'd definitely look at changing your dd's drinks if she is drinking more squash/juice than water.

I allow my kids juice first thing in the morning (Tropicana) because I like them to start the day with something decent. They have water at school. They then have a squash drink when they get home and then its water for the rest of the day/evening.

I'm pretty sure if I gave them squash in the evening they'd both be up for the loo during the night.
