Anybody know what this is at the bottom of newborns back? (Photo)

I have the health visitor coming next week so will also ask her but my newborn has this little hard lump which kinda feels like the bottom of his spine but it sticks out slightly and now has a little white head. It's just above his bum crack.

I asked the community midwife when I first noticed it (pre white head, just looked a little red) and she said she thinks it's just the bottom of his spine but now I'm not so sure?

It looks like a spot to me. Keep it clean, bit of Savlon on it maybe?

Yeah, looks like a little spot. I would try a warm compress and just keep it clean. Don't be tempted to pop it!

Given where it is, it could possibly be a small pilonidal cyst, which is where a small indentation at the top of the cleft of the buttocks can collect hair/debris and form a spot.

It's worth keeping an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get angry, but usually not a big problem.

And because this is a newborn and because of where it is your gp should check that they have no concerns too.

I'd see your GP just to be sure.

Sudocrem...
And willpower not to squeeze it!

Kanaloa · 09/07/2021 19:00

Yeah it looks like just a spot. Because of the area it could maybe be due to sweat/poo irritating the skin at some point. But you should show it to the health visitor anyway just to set your mind at ease.

How old? If brand new and not had 6 week check yet / been there since birth then go to your gp as pp said could be a cyst xx
