Struggle with baby feeding

My baby is now 3 months old and she's had problems with her feeding since she was a month old. we've been told she has acid reflux but with no examination just a couple questions asked and they put it down to reflux. we were given gaviscon sachets which didn't work, rang again and she's been on omeprazole today and she has thrown up loads worse than when she was on the gaviscon I've done research on other people's experiences with omeprazole in babies and they've had the same experience. It's getting to the point where I'm getting fed up of drugging her up on these medications and really want to try a prescription milk or get her tested for milk allergy but feel like my doctors will palm me off to give the omeprazole a go now. What do I do?????

Go back to your dr and tell him you want allergy tests. Be persistent? How is the baby's weight?

BunnyRuddington · 09/07/2021 16:47

An allergy test won't show if the allergy is non-ige though will it? It's usually just a case of elimination.

Are you BFing or FFing and have you spoken to Allergy UK?

leilathebaby · 09/07/2021 17:01

I just want to rule out absolutely everything I'd hate to think that all this time she's been having problems with the milk itself and it wasn't reflux to say she's not been physically examined. I will give Allergy UK a go she is formula feeding Smile

It's been a month since she was weighed she was last weighed at 8 weeks and she was at the 9lb mark. She was born 7lb 6. I will have to give drs a ring on Monday now with it being a weekend coming up and will update the thread

What milk is she on now? Have you ever swapped her formula to a different brand or tried a comfort formula?

She was on cow and gate in the first two weeks of life, then I moved her onto SMA decided that was worse moved her back onto cow and gate anti reflux, she struggles to get along with anti reflux so I put her on normal then she got massively hungry, was advised to put her on hungry milk by health visitors she's been on hungry milk since about 6 weeks old. Recently changed to aptamil a couple days ago. She doesn't get along with any of the three brands Confused

Hows her poo and her skin OP? Allergies can cause runny/green poo and dry/itchy skin depending on what kind it is. I'm very surprised a health visitor recommended hungry baby milk at 6 weeks old, it's harder for babies to digest so keeps them full, but can cause tummy issues. Put your foot down at the doctors!! My son had awful skin when he was a baby. I gave him some porridge at 6 months and we ended up in A&E with allergic reaction. I cut all the milk out of my diet (breastfed) and within 2 weeks the transformation was amazing.

Have you tried Aptamil pepti? The proteins are broken down so easier to digest

BunnyRuddington · 09/07/2021 20:28

Cow & Gate and Aptamil are made in the same factory. Could you try something completely different? Maybe Hipp Organic?

I agree that it does sound like there something more going on though Thanks

If you’re worried about an allergy please read the website above. As a doctor and cmpa mum - it’s not as simple as “allergy testing” and drives me up the wall when people give advice like that!

leilathebaby · 10/07/2021 12:41

I was oddly surprised to when recommended hungry baby milk but went along with what the health visitor said. Her skin is completely fine and her poos are as should be. I wasn't aware that aptamil and cow and gate are made in the same factory! Spur moment of decision I bought some aptamil reflux milk and faster teats and she's been able to keep her milk down which is a plus! I'll keep giving this a go over the weekend and see how she gets on with it. Also wasn't aware that it's not as simple as an allergy test Hmm I'll keep updating the thread for those interested and if anyone stumbles across this in the future!

Omeprazole was a life saver for my baby - it totally changed his life. It might be worth persevering for a week or so because it takes a bit of time to start working, but it can make a huge difference. It may also take a while to get the dose right - there’s a big range so it can take some trial and error to get the right one.

leilathebaby · 22/07/2021 16:00

An update!
My baby was still suffering with her feeds and omeprazole didn't seem to be doing anything in fact I think it made her worse so went back to the doctors and they put her on Nutramigen for CMPA and she's like a brand new baby! No throw ups, no fussiness, going longer between feeds seems to be satisfying her. We got there in the end Smile

That's amazing! We had the same experience with my DS, he went onto aptamil pepti and was great :)
