Is it acceptable to shave/cut my 9 week old baby's hair?

He had lots of hair when he was born but then lost a lot for some reason (my first had no hair) and now it's very patchy/thin but the actual hair is starting to grow.

Is it acceptable to cut/shave a baby's head at this age?

Dd had long hair with big bald patches as a baby. It probably would have looked better cut very short tbh

SupermanInk · 07/07/2021 09:54

Why would you? Confused

Purple21 · 07/07/2021 09:56

Most babies loose their hair.
Mine looked like a monk for months.
Never crossed my mind to shave it

It's very normal for them to be born with hair, then it all falls out bar a few bits (usually at the top as they don't get rubbed on mattresses etc) and then it starts growing again.

I don't see why there would be any harm in cutting it, but I also don't see why you'd bother unless it's so long that it's getting in their eyes.

gemloving · 07/07/2021 09:58

I actually was asked about it and then I was like: is this a thing? Do people do this? Is it acceptable?

I don’t understand why you would need to cut/shave it? At some point it evens out but at 9 weeks old this is normal. Never known anyone to modify a baby’s hair at this point.

MeadowHay · 07/07/2021 09:59

People routinely shave babies heads in some cultures so yes you definitely can. I can't imagine it would make any difference to hair growth though people from these cultures often believe it does. Equally it won't harm your baby at all so it's up to you.

grey12 · 07/07/2021 10:09

Of course you can! If your children other parent is also ok with it

My DDs had male pattern baldness as babies Grin it's normal. It grows out and then becomes a mullet Confused

PP was right, in some cultures people shave newborn's hair and give the weight in gold to charity Smile that's a nice thing to do for your child (PS: it's not a huge amount money but it's a very nice gesture)

SupermanInk · 07/07/2021 10:10

People are asking you to shave your baby’s hair?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/07/2021 10:10

yes, you can.

in some cultures they shave a newborn's head asap after birth because the hair they are born with is considered unclean.

PestilentMorpork · 07/07/2021 10:11

A friend of mine shaved her baby’s head to help with cradle cap.

If it bothers you, I don’t see the harm. But some hair loss is totally normal and it usually grows back within a few months, so if you’re worried about shaving his head you can just wait it out and it will resolve itself.

Perfectlystill · 07/07/2021 10:13

Very odd thing to do!

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 07/07/2021 10:17

it's very interesting to read about why different different cultures shave babies heads.

I'd never would've known it was even a things if not for an Indian friend who explained that it was a whole ceremony in her family.

to all those who say it's weird - just accept that your view point isn't universal

Totally acceptable 🙂 doesn't harm baby in any which way, and will have nice even hair all over when it does grow! People are bound to have opinions but it's your baby, do as you see fit! X

gemloving · 07/07/2021 10:22

I don't think I'll do it, I wouldn't even know where to start. I remember with my first, he had his first hair cut at around a

but yes, it was someone who hasn't had children asking if you shave/cut it if it goes like this.

But presumably it isn’t done in OPs culture as she’s questioning whether it’s a thing. So it’s only presumably to make the baby look ‘better’ in OPs situation....which if so, yes, that’s pretty weird. Babies couldn’t care less what they look like.

Nahhh · 07/07/2021 10:23

It’s normal in some cultures. My Chinese exMIL wanted me to shave my babies heads. She thought it would help their hair to grow through quicker

gemloving · 07/07/2021 10:24

I don't think I'll do it, I wouldn't even know where to start (I never cut anyone's hair) & I think he's the most beautiful little thing - no matter the hair!

Why is that?
gemloving · 07/07/2021 10:27

Also I remember the first proper haircut felt quite special with my first. I kept one lock in a trinket Star

My DS had his first hair cut at 9 weeks. But only because it was so long at the back it used to get caught in his bib when I fastened it!

"Old man" baby girl upset about her sister's hairdressing techniques Grin

Shmithecat2 · 07/07/2021 10:31

Ds didn't have scissors near his hair until he was about 18mo, and then that was only to trim a 'sort of' fringe in. He's had approx 4 trims since then. He's 5yo now with glorious hair. Shaving a babies head at 9 weeks, purely foe aesthetic reasons, seems a bit vulgar to me.

Chelyanne · 07/07/2021 11:20

Ours have all had very little hair their 1st year so it's not been something I've considered doing.
I certainly wouldn't shave my babies hair, maybe trim if it's in their eyes a lot.
