I know about child tax benefit, but im not sure with the others as we are a first time parents. Is there anything else we can apply for, or we get anything else?

You would need to apply for anything you wanted and it will be means tested e.g. universal credit. You can apply for child benefit but be aware that if one person in the family earns over £50k then some may need to be paid back and once you reach £60k it would all be paid back.

The only benefit I can claim is child benefit (£80 or so a month) is that the one you mean? You have to apply for that yourself but can back date it for a few months once baby is here.

I only know about child benefit. £130 a month for 2 kids. It will depend on what you / your partner earn.

It totally depends on your living circumstances and earnings. You could try one of the online calculators such as Entitledto (just search UK benefits calculator). I don't qualify for anything at all, I'm a SAHM but DH earns above the threshold for child benefit and we have a mortgage. But others may get hundreds a month, it totally depends so difficult to answer.

dementedpixie · 07/07/2021 10:06

@Chocolatebuttercream you should still claim child benefit and maybe opt out of payment if you're a SAHM. This helps with NI credits as you're not working

MouldyPotato · 07/07/2021 10:07

You have to apply. They won't contact you.

Chocolatebuttercream · 07/07/2021 10:08

@dementedpixie thanks, we did register for it and then opted to stop taking the money once DH's earnings went over the threshold, because otherwise DH has to do a tax return. Does that mean we will Still get the NI points? It's confusing!

dementedpixie · 07/07/2021 10:10

Yes you still get the NI credits if you have a claim and opt out of payment. And your child gets their NI number automatically when they turn 16 too

www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

Nothing is automatic and you will have to apply. Best to do it quickly after you have registered babys birth as back pay is limited. Check the calculator for eligibility.

Chelyanne · 07/07/2021 12:09

As a sahm I get child benefit. They give me NI credits toward my pension while we have children under 12 years old.
You can make voluntary NI contributions so you will be eligible for a state pension too, you need 30 years worth of contributions or credits.

@Chocolatebuttercream you can claim the national insurance element of child benefit until your youngest child is 12.

Unfortunately we both together not earned £50K when I was a full time worker, not to mention now when I'll get the £152/week maternity leave..:( whe have mortgages too, so Im a bit afraid how We gonna cope with the situation (we got this baby while I was on contraceptive pill😅) but well, He wanted to come to us, so we didn't thought about abortion or anything like that.. 😊 I try to not stress out about money wise

@Mommytobe2021 start saving as much as you can now. You also qualify for the child benefit so apply for that. Do one of the benefit calculator just in case. Also you can get tax free childcare if you return to work

Pissinthepottyplease · 07/07/2021 19:25

You maybe able to take a mortgage holiday while your on maternity leave.
