Should I take my child to doctors

I know no one is qualified on here just looking for opinions because I’m not used to my child being ill (lockdown).
Started Thursday, vomited once and full of snot no temp. Saturday seemed slightly better but then Sunday woke up feeling really hot and with a chesty cough and sore throat.

I only have an underarm thermometer which read 37.4 is it correct that you add a degree so would be 38.4? It’s also reading that this morning and chest sounding very phlegmy. Doesn’t sound like croup from what I’ve googled.

Was worried about going to gp incase I sound like a dramatic mum when if just a virus?

Have you had a COVID test? Are you giving regular calpol and/or ibuprofen to control the fever?

Personally, I’ve never taken one of my dc to the GP for a fever unless they were truly unwell (listless, hard to wake, one time when they had a febrile seizure- in this case, we went to A&E). This sounds like a normal virus to me. Lots of fluids, rest, calpol and stay away from other people til its better.

There's a nasty virus going round. My LO is currently in week 3 with it.
I did get in touch with the GP over econsult, they prescribed him an inhaler to help open his airways. Otherwise said fo ride it out and the cough can last for weeks.
Mine didn't have a temp, so with yours I'd do a COVID test first, if that's negative try and look at his throat for tonsillitis.
If his throat looks fine and just abit red it'll be viral so plenty Calpol, fluid, ice cream and cuddles!

Sounds like a cold. Give Calpol and ibuprofen. Let them potter round at home

You won't be able to get an accurate COVID result from a lateral flow due to symptoms, so would need a PCR. No harm in seeing if GP can prescribe an inhaler though.

Mine recently had the same. I was worried so i phoned the GP and they asked to see her - she'd developed an ear infection so was put on antibiotics which also helped her cough (she had it for about 2 weeks). If you're worried, there's no harm in phoning the GP even if it's just for your reassurance. Lots of fluids and calpol for the time being though.

Thanks all. I haven’t given calpol today as I read online it’s best to let them have a fever to fight it , is that true or shall I give calpol again?

No COVID test I didn’t think of covid to be honest.
I think I’m going to call the gp to put my mind at rest like some of you have said.
Thank you x

My DD 8mo was the same last week. I put it down to a common cold, with a cough. As there is so much going around at the moment. We ended up in a&e and admitted, she has a severe case of tonsillitis and ear infection. She had got to the point of not eating or drinking though, so needed IV antibiotics and fluids. No harm in getting the GP to check IMO.

Rc123467 · 28/06/2021 21:02

Thank you so the gp checked oxygen levels listened to chest and said no chest infection and it must be viral , which is good. But tonight we’ve had two vomiting episodes because of choking on all the phlegm. It’s horrible just wish he could cough it all up. :(

Definitely call the GP but book a a Covid test too so at least you have the ball rolling. Don’t be ashamed about not getting one. Definitely see the doc

Rc123467 · 28/06/2021 21:04

@DressingGown87 that must of been so scary ,the gp didn’t actually check my child’s ears or throat. How long was your little one ill before it got really bad ? Mines gone off food and water today:(

@Rc123467 she started mid week, but seemed fine even on Friday just a cold, and off her milk and food. But TBH we have been struggling for months with milk and food intake so I didn’t think much of it. Saturday she was very quiet, and still (complete change of personality), not touching anything, Saturday night we was admitted. Discharged today, she is currently asleep next to me, but still not drinking.

It’s horrible isn’t it when they are ill, you feel helpless. Try little and often with the fluid. Steamy showers for you, with DC in the bathroom. Lots of calpol and cuddles. Call 111 if you feel It’s getting worse. Hope your DS is better soon.

Rc123467 · 30/06/2021 21:14

Oh bless her 😢 poor little thing. We had an awful night of vomiting and coughing. Been eating and drinking small bits seems to pick up in the day abit ,but night times he’s the worst.

It really is so horrible ! I was in tears myself last night as he was so distressed an I just couldn’t seem to help him. Il try those tips thank you. Ive also bought a vapour plug in so hope it helps. Hope your little one feels better soon too xx

@Rc123467 can you prop the cot up so it’s on a recline? Coughs always seem the worst at night too. Vapour plugs are good too.

Thank you. We was rushed in again yesterday as she became unresponsive. High temperature and dehydrated. She has numerous infections and her little body is struggling so hard to fight them off. She also has a urine infection, and chest infection to add to the list. Luckily she was starting to pick up with some fluids (12hours later), but there was no beds at our hospital (72hour wait), so we would have been transferred over 75miles away. Her temperature is still over 39, and she is sleeping a lot. But I just need to get fluid in her, to keep her home and hope the new antibiotics work.
