What clothes does a winter newborn need?

No 1 was late spring baby plus I seem to have blanked on a lot of things from first time around. No 2 due in December. Started vaguely looking through the newborn/0-3 clothes we already have and we obviously don’t have much in the way of coats/snowsuits/warm layers/hats.

Any recommendations of items/brands to go for? Thanks!

I'd get a number of cardigans, hats, thick socks and blankets for the pram rather than snowsuits. In snowsuits they can too warm- you have to keep putting it on and taking it off when going inside somewhere- whereas a blanket you can just remove and a coat or warm cardigan just open at the front etc.

You can also get warm covers for the sling if you use one, or continue to wear your maternity winter coat and zip up half way over the sling x

My baby was a November baby, we didn’t really have anything unusual. In the house it’d just be vest and sleepsuit. When we went out it’d be either just a snowsuit over the top (one with hands already covered) and a hat. If it was particularly cold she’d maybe wear a cardigan under the snowsuit. Then just a blanket over the top. We had one of the star blankets which was great! My LO is such a hot baby though so I never had to worry about her getting cold

I loved our snowsuits, so easy to chuck on if you're going out with the pram. Blanket in the car to put over the car seat.

Brought a few blankets, cardis and hats. Both of mine just wore sleepsuits and vests in the house but had the heating clicking on throughout the day.

Also had a Nov baby after a spring one. The only extra things I bought were some long sleeve vests and one of those star wraps (tuppence and crumble) - much easier to take on and off than a snowsuit/pramsuit and can be worn in car seat and sling (pramsuits cannot). Layers are your friend.
Mine mostly wore vest, sleepsuit and cardigan.

I was just going to suggest one of these Smile

I don't get snowsuits for babies. DC2 (December born) was given one and it went to a charity shop unused. Too hot for the sling, too hot as soon as you enter a shop or anywhere which is a nightmare if they are asleep, bulky and awkward to put on.

Pramsuits are much better, being fleecy rather than bulky and easier to just unzip so they are lying on it like a blanket in a cafe etc.

Baby born in end of October but we had really cold November/December here. She was in mostly vests and sleepsuits in the house. Outside she had her hat, a warm coat, vest and either a sleep suit (she was a nightmare to put clothes on) or leggings with a thick blanket. We did use our snowsuit in December because she was able to fit in it. I find they're easier if it's a really cold day and you're just going for a walk outside. You can get gloves but if they're hiding their hands in a warm coat then I would just leave it cause it would be warm. Just check the back of the neck or chest if you think they're too warm.

For baths, make sure the house is slightly warm cause they will be screaming when they come out of a warm bath in the airy room. Learned that the hard way🙈🙈

First 2 dc were winter babies. They both had fleecy snowsuits which were lovely. Easy to layer up with blankets or unzip/remove if too hot. Knitted cardigans were very useful too.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/06/2021 14:23

Second idea about layers rather than snowsuits. With layers its easier to dress the baby according to the temperature as you can add/remove layers easily. Snowsuits are a faff I think. Also, I dont know where you are, or if you're even in the UK, but im on the south coast of the UK and it rarely got cold enough for snow suits.

I got things like cardigans, long sleeved vests, fleecy sleepsuits, blankets, hats.

Long sleeve vests and sleep suits with a couple knit jumpers and warm blankets and knit hat. Both of mine were winter babies and never owned a pram suit or loads of extra layers. Just sleep suits around the house and jumper, hat and blanket when we went out. In sling, they just went inside a thick jumper or coat we were wearing.

Letsallscreamatthesistene · 28/06/2021 14:31

Oh and a sling, because then they share your body heat a little bit.

My November baby lived in this pramsuit for few months, we had it in 0-1 month then a 0-3 month one, it was brilliant for just popping her into and heading out for a walk.

This blanket also did a brilliant job for keeping her warm in the car, in her bassinet, on the floor/couch in people's houses etc.

Inside she slept a lot on a sheepskin from IKEA under a cotton cellular blanket, it kept her cosy in the living room. For nightime the best thing I got was a Merino wool sleeping bag
2nd hand off eBay. It took all the guesswork out of blankets and sleep layers. She was warm and cosy and I worried less about her overheating or being too cold.

We’re in the North East so it does get right cold up here!
