What age did you potty train? How did you know you LO was ready? What method did you use?

Dd was 2½ years old and ds was around 20 months. Dd was put into pants and taken to the toilet regularly. Dd was a bit younger so we started with pull up nappies and took him to the toilet regularly. Once he was reliably making it to the toilet in time he went into pants. He was day trained by age 2.

Paddingtonsmarmlade · 27/06/2021 15:37

Ds was 2.1 Done in 10/12 days but would wait for nap/bed nappy for poo (never had an accident) for about 2 months, poo went to Pooland app and time and he sorted that himself and just did it from then on. Never really had any accidents.

Dd started at the same age but took 2 weeks to get it and then a further 5/6 weeks to get it whilst dressed (reliably) no issues with poo at all in fact that was on the potty from day 2 reliably.

We did oh crap method naked waist down then commando then pants. Ds got on with this well but he was very good with dressing/undressing dd struggled as the younger sibling I think I'd done more for her as I had 2 to get ready and less time to let her do it for herself. So dd we went to pants before she'd managed commando as she seemed to manage getting pants down better trousers.

Ds started waiting for the 2 minutes I was out of the room to poo it happened everyday for a month. Dd didn't show any signs other than me having to physically restrain her in order to do nappy changes. If it was going to be such a battle I thought I might as well give it a go. Ds was not talking at all but did baby sign so we taught him potty sign.

In the summer when DD was two and a half I dressed in her in just a T-shirt, kept her in the garden as much as possible, and encouraged her to use the potty or toilet. She was pretty aware of when she needed a wee. She was reliably toilet trained after around a week.

In the summer when DS was two and a half I dressed in him in just a T-shirt, kept him in the garden as much as possible, and encouraged him to use the potty or toilet. He was pretty aware of when he needed a wee, and after a week he could reliably wee in a potty or toilet if naked from the waist down. He was reliably toilet trained after around another two years, because it turns out that poos were a whole different kettle of fish for him.

Both DD's were dry, day and night, by 2.5 but DD2 took a little longer for the nights.

Started training just after 2 with both of them.

nutellamagnet · 27/06/2021 15:49

DS1 was nearly 4. Dry in three days and never looked back. Dry overnight within a month.

He wasn't ready til then - didn't want to know - and while I'm impressed at the ages of some of these kids I note that it took 4-6 months until they were apparently dry. For us it was the right thing to wait until he wanted to do it.

Snowpaw · 27/06/2021 15:58

2 years 9 months. The signs were she starting asking to be changed / announcing when she’d done a poo. Was talking about other children at nursery who go to the potty and was expressing interest in knickers. Had good verbal understanding / communication skills. Was also sometimes staying dry all morning in a nappy.
We did the oh crap method - it was great. First two days a lot of wee on the floor but by day 3 was taking herself to the potty very reliably. Poo has been a little trickier - she likes plenty of privacy to poo (don’t we all though) but she’s done quite a few poos on the potty.

ShinyGreenElephant · 27/06/2021 16:04

Dd1 I started just after she turned 2 and she had it down within 3 days. She wet the bed however until she was 7 and a half.

Dd2 we did it just after she turned 18m as it was lockdown, summer and we were trapped in the house / garden and bored. Took 2 weeks for her to be fully reliably dry when wearing clothes and underwear, but she then stopped weeing at night as well and by 20m she was officially completely dry at night.

Theyre all so, so different and its impossible to predict. They all do it in the end as well so not something to lose any sleep over, I was just super pleased to have DD2 trained early as we use cloth and its a lot of washing and faff!

aliloandabanana · 27/06/2021 16:06

Just turned/just about to turn 3. Both got it really quickly and although night times took longer, we just used pull ups at night until they were dry. One had one poo "accident" which I think was just laziness and a couple of accidents due to falling asleep during the day, the other just had a few occasions where they didn't make it to the loo on time.

Someone recommended waiting till 3 as it was so much easier, and I'm glad I took their advice - no taking a potty everywhere (it never left the house and they barely used it, just went straight to the toilet with a child seat on), no constant worrying about accidents etc, and no endless changing of wet clothes. A few more nappies to buy/wash in the meantime but far less stress than some people seem to go through.

DramaAlpaca · 27/06/2021 16:11

My three boys were all done before they were 2 and a half, but that's what we did 20 odd years ago. It was unusual to wait until they were three.

We didn't look for signs they were 'ready', just stayed at home for a week and got on with it. It took between three days and two weeks with my three.

IDontDrinkTea · 27/06/2021 16:13

Dd was 20 months. Just let her be at home and nappy free, and gave her an m&m every time she was successful on the potty. She got it in about two days (she’s very susceptible to bribery 😂)

womaninatightspot · 27/06/2021 16:26

DS1 2yr 11 months (for starting nursery at 3 - was dry overnight straight away)

DS2 2yr he'd tell you he wanted to go but pull up pants at night to nearly 5.

Twins DD1 and 2 3 and a bit in time for school nursery they'd been dry at night for ages though

sar302 · 27/06/2021 16:36

2 yrs 4 months. He got it immediately, but had a bit of a stumbling block moving from potty to toilet - he hated the toilet for bloody ages!

Used the Oh Crap method loosely. Waited until he could say the alphabet (guide for communication readiness) and was within their recommended age range.

Had nappies still for nap and night. He was quickly dry for nap and dry at night about 6 months later - theyre different "skills" so don't worry about doing both at once. Nighttime comes when it comes.

If it's not working, don't be too proud to stop. I know people who persisted even though their kids were soaking 4 pairs of trousers a day for months after they were "trained". Just stop. Give it several months and try again.

Good luck!

Dinosharks · 27/06/2021 16:43

1 month before DD turned 3 we started, she was non verbal but understanding everything,. We did the oh crap method. She was trained within a couple of weeks and night trained herself just after she turned 3.

TheFairyCaravan · 27/06/2021 16:48

DS1 was trained in a week at 22 mths. He was really easy. He just announced that he wasn’t wearing nappies anymore and that was that.

DS2 was 2.2. during the day and just over 3 at night.

This was over 20yrs, though, and it was really rare for children to be trained any later. They could start pre school at 2 and a half and they had to be dry for that.

ChocOrange1 · 27/06/2021 16:50

22 months. We went to asda to buy clothes and she saw some peppa pig pants she wanted so I bought them for future use, but then she wanted to wear them so I just let her try them out for a bit and went from there. We didn't use any particular method, just put her on the potty regularly.

Getawriggleon · 27/06/2021 16:55

2.5yo - did Oh Crap, reliably dry day and night within a week. Very unexpected given I didn't think she was ready at all but they are constantly surprising!

KurtWilde · 27/06/2021 16:55

I started all mine at 18 months, dry within a month or two during the day, dry most nights by 2.

merryhouse · 27/06/2021 17:16

S1: 3 and a month.

I tested the waters (as it were, sorry) a couple of months before because we had a school nursery place offered, but decided he wasn't ready: I asked whether he needed to go and he said no, then less than two minutes later he'd wet himself. (Which gave rise to a very cute moment: the way he informed me of this was "I'm sorry my dear" which is what the Fat Controller said to his wife in one of the stories. Grin)

When we tried again he got it almost immediately: most of the "accidents" we had were simply missing the potty ("my penis was at a funny angle" or "I was doing it like Daddy does") and I washed his bedding more often due to sick than wee. Reliable during the day at 3y1m, dry at night 3y5m.

S2 was about the same age and daytimes took slightly longer (he occasionally had an accident at nursery). Night accidents didn't stop entirely till he was about 9.

(S1 is now at A Top University and S2 has a conditional offer for the same place.)

AegonT · 27/06/2021 21:49

DD was 2 years 4 months. Was quite happy in nappies and never said when it was even wet. We trained then as it was the Summer holidays so my husband was off work so she wasn't in childcare for a few weeks. We used the Oh Crap method. We had a tricky few weeks but then she was reliably dry.

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 27/06/2021 21:51

DD - 19 months
DS1 - 3
DS2 - 22 months

I don’t know any methods? DD told us she wanted to use the toilet luke her older cousin. Cracked it in a week day and night.
DS1 is speech delayed and disabled so took him longer. He started holding himself when he needed a wee so we put him in pants and watched for his signals.
DS2 watched DS1 and asked to sit on the toilet. We starting sitting him on there every 30 mins or so over a long weekend and he got it.
All dry at night at the same time except DS1 who has a few accidents.

mommybear1 · 27/06/2021 21:58

Totally unplanned DS just turned 2 and had scarlet fever and a horrible reaction to penicillin- due to his rash we kept him nappy free and followed the Oh Crap method.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 27/06/2021 21:58

never

tried it with DS1 a few times when he was 2 (summer born) but he wasn't keen.
tried it with DS2 at the same age once but it went badly and he was terrified to try again.

so I gave up, waited a bit longer then toilet trained them instead around age 3.
never even bothered with the others
