Potty training 3 yo boy

Hello,

I am after some advice on potty training please. My little boy is just over 3 years old. He is due to start pre-school in a couple of months and they expect them to be potty trained (occasional accident expected). Currently he has no accidents at home or with grandparents, but will consistently do no.2s in his pants at nursery. No wee accidents though.

We gently introduced him to potty training and after 3 weeks he did all his wees on the toilet or potty. Mostly dry through the night too. However, over the past 6 months he has only had one day at nursery where he hasn't had a no.2 accident. This has never got particularly better or worse since we started. He doesn't have accidents at home because we can catch him in time.

When we ask him where to do no.2 s he will consistently say the toilet. He knows he shouldn't go in his pants. He isn't upset when we flush the toilet and likes washing his hands. We always react so positively when he goes on the toilet and he seems so pleased when he does. This hasn't made a different though so far.

Does anyone have any advice please? I'm out of ideas.

Sorry, no help but I could have written this post. Hopefully someone else will come along with advice!

Yep, we’re in the same situation. That said, I think the preschool are being a tad unhelpful, because not everyone is totally ready at that age. Luckily mine’s pooing has formed into a sort of predictable 11am thing, so he goes to preschool in underpants, then at the 10.30 change they put him in a nappy, then when that’s done he goes back in underpants. It’s not ideal but less distressing for him and faff for adults. He is starting to independently use the potty for poos at home but it has been incredibly slow, like 6 months. And not yet reliably consistent. I’d have a word with preschool and just try to find something that is manageable and as long as you’re trying and he’s trying, they really can’t ask for more.

Such a load of flip flopping, thoroughly confusing for the child

That’s not a hugely supportive comment. We’ve tried lots and arrived at this as the best option for now. If your aim is to make people feel bad then I suggest you don’t post.

No, not trying to make you feel bad. But honestly sometimes people just need to call and spade a spade

We are in the tricky situation whereby our preschool have forewarned us that if the child is having more than the odd accident they would first be offered a two week period off preschool to address the issue. If after that they aren't fully trained they'll be asked to return next term. That would leave us in the difficult situation of trying to find last minute temporary childcare.

Thank you. Is it that still useful even after 7 months in?

That book is absolutely fantastic. It's fuss free and completely direct.

Yes will work 7 months in, will advise on doing a reset and start again properly.

I just wanted to come on and update our situation. We were planning on going bare bum for several days at home next week just like when we started as it was looking like he just wasn't going to stop pointing in his pants.

Well, we haven't changed anything yet and this past week he's said he needs a poo and goes off to the toilet just like when he needs a wee.

Nursery has been saying to us that poos take longer, especially for boys but then it just clicks. It certainly seems to be that way for us.

2.5 months since we started potty training. He knew what he needed to do he just wasn't ready until now.
