Very able child.. Should we do anything?

My son is very academically able and has always been very "ahead" in milestones, reading levels etc. He's now 8 and does very well in school but he isn't really challenged there. He's happy, and has good friendships, he has hobbies outside of school and generally there are no issues. He reads a lot, above his age (several YA novels each week alongside school and his other hobbies and interests). Every now and then I have a niggling doubt that I should be "doing something". Some googling led me to "PotentialPlus" but all their assessments are expensive and I wonder if there's really any point to them? The only thing is I'd hate him to feel like he missed out on any opportunity because I was too laid back about his education. Is there something I should be doing or asking school to do, or do I just leave him to it? Thanks!

You'll probably get the best advice if you get this moved over to the Gifted & Talented section.

He’s happy and doing well. If it ain’t broke….

Pay for extra tuition in a fave subject perhaps?

Id be really careful not to 'push' though because you could turn a happy child into one reluctant to do anything.

If he's happy just let him be.

We've focused on breadth of interests with our two, but also with plenty of downtime/time outdoors. You don't say what your DS's hobbies are but I'd recommend learning a musical instrument if he doesn't already. My DDs have learnt that they have to put the work in to improve/succeed in music where they didn't have to as much in school. Coding/electronics projects are also good.

Thanks, yeah hobbies wise he plays an instrument and has weekly online lessons. Also an online "scratch" account where he codes projects, and chess on Chesskid.com. He swims well although haven't gone back to lessons since Covid but plan to. So long as I'm not missing anything important then I'm just happy that he's happy! 😊
