If you were sent home from work due to a power cut would you still expect to be paid? I really don't know the answer to your question tbh but I supppose they still have costs to cover. However, I think I'd be a bit miffed if I had to pay... dd's nursery closed in the summer due to loss of water and we didn't have to pay if that helps

Do you have any sort of written contract - if so check if it mentions such eventualities. If not - seems unreasonable for you to pay for a service you didn't receive.

I would expect to still have to pay. After all they still have to pay their staff and other expenses don't they?

i did think that i would still have to pay to be honest because of their overheads etc even though all the staff have gone home. I know you still have to pay if you go on holiday or through sickness etc. It's just annoying I guess that's all, esp as my girls only go twice a week and i was really looking forward to my couple of hours off this afternoon! oh well....

I think it would be reasonable to pay, you're paying for the place, not the service.
That said, our preschool has the policy that if we close due to bad weather, parents don't have to pay.

If you still have to pay ask for a day in lieu ..... that's what my nursery does for Bank Holidays

I've just had to close our pre-school due to staff illness (54 out of 201 kids were off at the attached school yesterday with d&V) and we will be refunding the charge we make for lunch club, but not worrying about the fees we get from NEGs. I would never dream of charging individula parents for services we couldn't provide.

Botbot · 22/11/2007 13:25

Our nursery was closed for a day last winter because of a problem with the electronic locks on the doors - they couldn't get in - and we didn't get charged for the day.
