Sons rude comments

My sons behaviour is what I would call “challenging” he’s awaiting assessment for autism, don’t know if that’s relevant but just thought I would mention it. (He is 9)

Anyway for a while now he has been insulting anything I cook him for dinner, always saying it’s nasty or disgusting, I know it isn’t my cooking as 1) the other children have never complained, 2) he always eats it and 3) it will be whether I cooked it or whether it was just chicken burgers from the freezer like today. He will constantly say AFTER eating it “eugh that was disgusting” then 2 seconds later be like “I’m just joking” the worst part is he went to a family members house and told them my food is disgusting.
I really feel like going on strike and not cooking anything for him anymore if my food is that nasty, would that be unreasonable? To just make him beans and toast etc?

I know it’s frustrating but would just ignore a comment like that. Like I would literally act like a didn’t hear it. It sounds like he’s doing it for a response from you.

Have you talked to him about it and told him it’s rude and suggested some other things he can say instead?

Rubytinsleslippers · 24/06/2021 19:16

I'd get him involved in the cooking. At 9 he can and should be. Perhaps then he will start to appreciate the effort.

Jump on it straight away and tell him not to be so rude. ASD children can have good manners and be courteous too.

If he’s rude, take it away. If it’s after eating, send him to his room for ten minutes.

“Well DS, if you really don’t like it, you better come and help me cook so I can get it just right”

Just thank him for his comments and walk away. If you bite he will do it more.

Our son also awaiting asd assessment has a habit of being quite rude, not to me but if we go to other people's houses. His favourite is "I'm bored, are we going home now?". Our 9 year old went through a phase of insulting everything I made for her to eat but it passed, just think Beauty and the Beast.... go ahead and starve!! She always ate the food as there was no other option.

Thanks for the comments, I usually say to him not to eat it then but he says he “hasn’t finished” Hmm good idea about involving him in cooking if I’m so bad at it!

I would literally pretend you didn't hear it. Don't give it any attention, positive or negative. Feel free to involve him in cooking but don't do it as a response to his comments.
