Nappy change difficulty

DS has become hard to change, wriggly and throwing tantrums. Ironically pull ups have made it just as bad. Any tips, any expierences on how to deal with this?

How old are they?
I used to give mine a toy to play with whilst I changed him and sing songs

Newmama29 · 23/06/2021 19:32

My tactic is just pure distraction. I give him a toy, or the packet of wipes to play with or if I have to my phone with some YouTube video on it 😂

A good tactic is to sit on your bottom kind of hip level with the baby on his/her right and put your left leg gently over baby’s tummy holding him/her steady then you have two hands free to change the nappy and baby can’t escape! Works a treat!

18months
He gets really sad when it needs to be done but perhaps I might give him more responsibility etc hold the wipes

mine is the same! i usually give him a toy or my phone with hey duggee on it to keep him still for 5 minutes

ShinyGreenElephant · 23/06/2021 19:39

This is why I potty trained DD at 18m, took a good 2 weeks solid effort but shes been great since and has been dry at night too since 20m. Saved us an absolute fortune

I get DSs trousers off, vest undone and old nappy off, bum cleaned etc while he’s wriggling / crawling / standing, then for the crucial putting new nappy on time I give him
Something to hold that he’s not usually allowed / something new and exciting. He is so entranced with it he will stay still on his back for the 30 seconds it takes to put new nappy on.

Items I’ve had success with:
Keys
Big sisters toys
Makeup bag
Nightlight
Lid from a reusable Coffee cup
Empty bubble bath bottle
Nail file
Hairbrush

Basically anything that’s not horrifically dangerous for the baby!

I either just ignore the tantrum and pin him down or sing a song to him in a Barry White style which he finds hilarious and so keeps still long enough for me to do the nappy. Whatever works...

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 23/06/2021 19:45

Toy torch was a lifesaver for me at this stage as DD used to lie still so she could shine it on the ceiling. Save it only for nappy times though!

GrandmasterGlitchsMoustache · 23/06/2021 19:45

We had to start doing stand up nappy changes while distracted at a play table. Gross when the nappy's dirty but easy if just a wee.

Thanks for replies. Hardest bit is getting bum area clean but will give all suggestions a go.

My 8 month old has started crawling off and fighting nappy changes too, asking him to hold the wipes seems to keep him entertained for the duration although the pack always goes straight in his mouth Grin. Anything new and "forbidden" usually will do the trick having seen the same issue with older nieces and nephews
