With meaning attached? Probably around 14 months. Strings of mamamama and dadadada not attached to anyone/anything at about 8 months.

Mintjulia · 22/06/2021 18:58

2 years, 3 months. Hmm

His first word was 'key' at 2 years 2 months, by which point I'd started to think he would never talk. He wanted the car key.

By 2 years 5 months he was chatting away in whole sentences.

DS1 was 13 or 14m old when he said his first word, with meaning at it was "daddy"

DH said goodbye and went downstairs and DS1 ran after him and in quite a demanding tone said "Daddy!" 🤣
(I guess he didn't want him to go).

we both were quite taken aback by how deliberate he said it! it was such a lovely moment

I don't remember with the others so clearly, they all said daddy first IIRC.
DS2 & DS3 were roughly around the same age.
I think DS4 was a bit earliest just a few days after he turned 1. he was a real chatterbox.

DS5 & DD had speech delay.
he said only 5 words until he was almost 2.5yo (dada, mama, milk, baba & fat - anything that wasn't the first 4 things was "fat"🤣), she didn't say anything until she was almost 3 and I honestly can't remember what it was.
DS6 was around the 13-14m mark as well

My DD was just over 12 months when she started babbling ‘dada’.. she’s 13.5 months now and started saying ‘mama’ but neither with meaning.

mindutopia · 22/06/2021 20:26

Sometime between 12-14 months or so with both. There is a babbling phase that starts from around 8-9 months when they will say ‘dadadadada’ but it’s just a sound rather than a word.

Dollywilde · 22/06/2021 20:29

My 10 month old says Mamamamamam all the time but I am convinced it has nothing to do with me and everything to do with the fact that when she does it everyone stares at her and celebrates Grin

Dollywilde · 22/06/2021 20:29

X post with @mindutopia, exactly that!

sergeilavrov · 22/06/2021 20:40

DS1 held out on mama and baba until he was 18 months. Notable words prior to that included uh oh (I count this as the first word, when DH dropped cake on the floor); duckie (all animals and some people were duckies) and a reasonable attempt at ‘idiot’ while pointing at someone Blush. DS2 said our dog’s name first, then his brother, and we are still waiting.

I was with my sister and her family the other day, BIL handed me my 9 month old niece and left the room. She looked quite miffed but I was able to distract her with a book. He came back a few minutes later and as he came through the door she twisted backwards and tried to crawl off my lap towards him and said quite distinctly Da! Da! it is probably wishful thinking that it had any meaning as she makes that sound at other random times but it warmed my heart 😁

Pigeonorcoot · 23/06/2021 22:23

My 10 month old says dadadada when she's happy and mumumumum when she's miserable Hmm I try not to take it to heart!

Dyra · 23/06/2021 22:28

With meaning? We got a definite daddy at about 15 months. She was saying dada for a while before then as well. Coming up 22 months and I'm still waiting for mummy or even just mama.

I'm referred to as daddy or ba ba. sad sigh

atvh · 23/06/2021 23:03

Around 13 months with meaning. At least I think it’s with meaning and not just coincidence. He’ll see dad come into the room and say Dadadada.

iduno · 23/06/2021 23:36

Dd1 was 6 months old when she said mama it was her first word. Not that she was calling me it but she cld say it. Dada came about 2 months later. She was a great talker and won't shut up now 😂 she's 4 and very full on with the chat!

DD2 was about 13 months, dada we have heard from around the same time but she just doesn't say it very often 😂 Hiya and mama were her only 2 words for months. She's 18 months now and has about 16/17 words but way behind where her sister was. I'm glad she's started saying more words now though.

Squicknick · 23/06/2021 23:39

Babbling, maybe 6 months. Actually meaning the words, 14 months

MissChanandlerBong90 · 25/06/2021 20:25

Babbling - around 7 or 8 months. At the time I obviously convinced myself he was saying it with meaning, of course.

With meaning - 16/17 months I think.

Onthegrapevine · 25/06/2021 21:50

Mine is 16 months and has only just started saying mama & dada with meaning but even then I’m not convinced it’s 100% meaningful. He has always babbled a lot but never babbled mama or dada.

His main word is “cat” and he points out the cat all day long and repeats it “cat, cat, cat” - all the other animals in his books are also cats apparently Grin

As far as I understand it doesn’t matter so much what they are saying as much as it does that they are learning to communicate, respond etc
