Toddler viral infection

Hi all, My toddler started nursery 3 months ago. After a couple of weeks he came down with a bad cold cough & fever, seen the gp after weeks of putting up with a cough that never went away. I was told it's a viral infection and it will go away. However he's now had this cough for two and a half months with no improvement. He doesn't sleep at night as he wakes up due to his cough. He coughs every few minutes and the fever keeps coming back every week. I took him back as no improvement has been noticed after over two months.
GP still insists that it's a viral infection and no need to act with antibiotics and says it's normal to have a cough for 3 months and for fever to come back every week for days.
Has anyone had this before with their little ones? It's definitely not COVID as he's been tested. How long should a viral infection take to go away .. surrey not 3/4/5 months.
Many thanks

Yes, my little girl has pretty much been unwell since the day she started nursery In September. It sucks.

Because she’d been coughing for so long and it was thought to be viral she was given an inhaler for a ‘post viral wheeze’ it calmed the cough down at night.

But It came to a climax couple of weeks ago with a 40 degree fever. Basically because she’d been ill for so long, constant colds etc she’d developed an upper respiratory tract infection that did need antibiotics, 2 week course and she seems to be better.

I’d keep an eye on it xx

Yes it is fairly normal for nursery kids and leads usually to a very robust immune system. My DD has only had 1 day off sick from school, now at end of year 5.

I just wait it out, use a cold air humidifier at night, and Vicks rub.

My DD has similar in March/April/May 2020. She was 8 months when it started. The GPs wouldn’t see her but we were prescribed I think two courses of antibiotics which did nothing, then an inhaler with a mask thing and I don’t know if that helped or it just ran it’s course by the time we got the inhaler but the cough went in the end.

My 3 year old has had a cough and cold on and off for about 3 months! Unfortunately we have been here before the pandemic hit and it just ran it’s course. We were literally in and out of GPs office every week!!! We are going to be taking her in on Monday to have her checked out but the cold keeps coming back and the cough at night especially just keeps on coming.
