Which of these two styles would you pick? I've never bought any before and I'm planning to bulk buy one of these in multiple sizes for my messy, active, and fast-growing DD!

The one with the zip is starchier material, the other is thinner and softer. Both have 4.5/5 star reviews.

I'm basically wondering if one type might last better than the other, require no ironing, or be more practical in another way? I think I prefer the style of the one with buttons but don't know if there's a reason this style is less popular in the shops.

Otherwise, I'll welcome any other suggestions for very tall and slim DD (i.e. standard sizes are usually too short, or if long enough, usually too baggy on top).

Pick the one your dd can put on by herself mostly easily. Probably the one with a zip.

Soubriquet · 20/06/2021 13:25

Which ever you prefer really

I have the second one as the first one didn’t sit right on dd. The straps kept falling down whereas the second one was more secure

SpringBluebellWoods · 20/06/2021 13:26

Jersey ones are softer and look fine straight out of the wash, both my dds preferred them.

The one with the zip down the front, no question. The starchiness will decrease since you will be washing it constantly.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/06/2021 13:28

The jersey material is warmer and more comfortable.
The other material repels stains. My DD SAT in paint. The dress was covered. Washed off no trouble.

SkyBlueKitchen · 20/06/2021 13:30

@aiwblam why definitively that one?

She's tried on a few in shops and couldn't do any herself. She can undo a zip but couldn't then get it off herself as there's not much give in that kind. The other is stretchy but she can't do buttons yet. I'll need to help either way, at least for a while. She'll be going in PE kit (polo and joggers) on PE day so no issue there.

@SpringBluebellWoods did you find the jersey ones bobble or were they ok?

MisgenderedSwan · 20/06/2021 13:35

My daughter is very slim and the style in your first pic kept slipping off her shoulders. She has ones similar to the second picture. It's not really worth bulk buying though, we just buy 2 or 3 at a time and replace when outgrown or looking scruffy.

CrabbitArse · 20/06/2021 13:37

Going against the majority here but I'm voting for the first one, it has pockets, kids love pockets & they're much rarer on girls clothes

SpringBluebellWoods · 20/06/2021 13:40

OP Some bobble, depends on brand and a bit on how you wash them. I personally don’t mind a bit of bobbling, they’re just uniform and in YR they’re mostly covered in lunch, paint, mud etc anyway.

GU24Mum · 20/06/2021 13:42

Why don't you get one of each and then top up when she's at school and is wearing them rather than bulk buy now? They're really easy to get hold of and you might decide you prefer them from mine shop over another - or might end up good friends with someone with a boy in your daughter's class who has an older sister and they're keen to pass things on!

MargosKaftan · 20/06/2021 14:21

I would go with the one with pockets if you have to pick now.

However, bulk buying now is a bonkers way to do it. Buy 2 of each style (they will get messy in reception), see which she prefers.

Be prepared for some point her wanting trousers or a skirt instead of pinafores.

Stichintime · 20/06/2021 14:24

Definitely the second. The first looks like it could get scruffy quickly because of the straps.

NerrSnerr · 20/06/2021 14:27

This style is my daughter's favourite.

Thanks all. I think I wanted to buy them for the year now as I already feel like I've spent ages finding styles I don't mind the look of and that will fit - the button one has an elastic back and isn't obviously wide anyway so I can buy it long enough without it looking massive, and the zip one comes in longer length so I can get it to (more or less) fit on top and still reach her knees. Just didn't want these to be sold out down the line and I have to spend hours hunting again.

I like the look of the first one more but i bought my four year old daughter one more like the second one because I know she’d not be able to keep the straps up on the first one and she’s still prone to just take off any clothing that annoys her.
I got her this one from Next

Justajot · 20/06/2021 14:36

Jersey ones from Asda worked well for us, but I don't know if they'd work well on a particularly slim child.

Jersey means they are easy to get on/off.

LoopTheLoops · 20/06/2021 14:37

Where’s the first one from
Please? I hate those ones with the zips so I would pick the first

I also got her this one which is similar to the first one but the straps seem closer to the neck and easier to keep on, especially with her school cardigan on top.

Permanentlygrumpy · 20/06/2021 15:27

The one with the zip without a question as it'll help your dd become an independent dresser quickly.

Haggisfish3 · 20/06/2021 15:29

Jersey ones definitely. Easy to wash and dry and no ironing!

SkyBlueKitchen · 20/06/2021 15:51

I think we're about 50/50 on the comments here! Grin

@LoopTheLoops Matalan. Currently out of stock online but in my local store, plus you can register for an alert for when it's back online.

I'm still leaning slightly towards the first (or similar but with fixed straps) as jersey seems best for comfort and lack of ironing. I looked up Asda to see if I'd missed a jersey one there and it seems I did, @Justajot. Is it this one with buttons all down the front? Wasn't sure on it at first glance which is probably why I'd scrolled past originally, but it does look nice and soft and the reviews suggest it might fit (people saying it's a good length but slim on top).
