Any suggestions for books to read out loud to babies please? Smile

I want to start building a little collection for my 7 month old son.

So far on my list to buy, I’ve got:

Dear Zoo
Going on a bear hunt
Very hungry caterpillar
The Gruffalo
The Tiger who came to tea
Goodnight moon
Where’s Spot
Guess how much I love you

Thank you! Grin

My DD loves Peepo

OddshoesOddsocks · 20/06/2021 01:44

I love all the Julia donaldsons because they have such a lovely rhythm to them. The gruffalo etc are gorgeous but she does some for younger ones too like the foxes socks which some in hard back with flaps to lift.

I also love the large family books and Alfie books which I’ve brought through from my childhood

Will have a look! Thank you! Grin

Car car truck Jeep

I'd recommend having a look in charity shops for books - one near me does 5 for £1.

Meg and Mog was the first book my son loved, learning to clap when 'there was a flash and a BANG'.

Julia Donaldson (the gruffalo, stick man, zog, room on the broom etc) is very popular with kids and parents alike, however her books are beyond babies really. But she has a really nice collection of board books with more simple language and stories to follow with repeated rhyming phrases and flaps to lift. The collection is called Tales from Acorn Wood and the four individual stories are:
Fox’s Socks
Hide and Seek Pig
Postman Bear
Rabbit’s Nap

Julia Donaldsons for reading together
Pip and Posy
We found those books that name things (names of trucks, household objects, basic parts of body, clothes etc) really useful as you could
show DD the actual object you're talking about. No plot or story involved, but helped her learn some words
Hairy McLary

Local library is selling children's books 5 for £1 at the moment - worth having a look!

Mine loves the 'felt flaps' books. They aren't terribly interesting to read out loud, but he can get involved, which he finds very satisfying; and the book lives to tell the tale, which works for me!

Lots of great suggestions already!
We loved Peepo and baby Boo. Then dazzling diggers when a bit older.
In fact I did write my son a poem when he was young using some words he knew and I finally got some illustrations done recently. I was wondering if any other babies might enjoy it? Would be interested in feedback. Thanks x

Look at the books2door website. You can get sets of books like Julia Donaldson for a really good price.

hey9654 · 06/08/2021 00:07

The 'never touch a...' series, ds's favourite! Also the 'that's not my....' series

alexio · 06/08/2021 00:15

My sons favourite is is that your poo kangaroo, it's got a squishy (stress ball material) poop on each page. He's 1.5 now but he's loved it since about 9 months

Another favourite is the gruffulo touch and feel book

MangoM · 06/08/2021 00:17

Mine loved the felt flap books at that age. The where's mr duck, where's mrs butterfly type ones by ingela p arrhenius.

Also the The Big Book of Beautiful Babies by David Ellwand is a lovely book for babies to learn about emotions. We always (still) get a huge pretend laugh at the 'baby laughing' page.
